In a vibrant display of national pride and unity, the Retreat Ceremony held at both Hussainiwala (Punjab) and Attari-Wagah Border drew massive crowds on the Indian side, while the Pakistani galleries stood nearly empty, creating a striking visual contrast.

The Beating Retreat Ceremony, held daily at the international border, is a ceremonial event symbolizing the end of hostilities for the day between India and Pakistan. On special occasions or weekends, it attracts thousands of spectators from both sides. At Hussainiwala, which holds historic significance as the resting place of freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev, the energy was electric. The crowd erupted in patriotic chants as the Border Security Force (BSF) soldiers performed their fierce and synchronized parade. The same spirit was witnessed at Attari, where thousands of citizens from across the country had gathered to witness the ceremony.

In contrast, the Pakistani side appeared deserted, raising curiosity and concern among viewers. Videos posted on social media captured this unusual sight, leading many to speculate on the reason behind the lack of audience participation across the border.

Indian spectators described the experience as “goosebump-inducing”, expressing pride in witnessing the discipline and spirit of the Indian armed forces. The synchrony in marching, lowering of flags, and the roaring cheers from the audience gave many a moment to cherish.

Security was tight at both locations, with local police and border forces ensuring safe movement of the crowd. Special arrangements were made in light of the high footfall, including additional barricades, water stations, and flag distribution centers.
