Punjab Scorches as Temperature Crosses 47 Degrees

Hottest in 13 Years, Heatwave Alert in 18 Districts Today….

Punjab : is experiencing an extreme heatwave, with temperatures soaring past 47 degrees Celsius — the highest recorded in the state over the last 13 years. This alarming rise in mercury levels has triggered a red alert for heatwave conditions in 18 districts, issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

According to weather experts, this intense heat is due to persistent dry northwesterly winds and the absence of any significant weather system to bring relief. Cities like Bathinda, Amritsar, and Fazilka have reported temperatures between 46.5°C and 47.2°C, causing widespread discomfort among residents and putting vulnerable populations such as the elderly and children at serious risk.

The extreme heat has also led to a sharp increase in power consumption. Electricity demand across the state has surged due to the heavy usage of air conditioners, coolers, and fans. Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) reported peak power demand rising above 16,000 megawatts, putting immense pressure on the grid. Authorities are urging citizens to use electricity responsibly and avoid unnecessary load during peak hours.

Hospitals across several districts have reported a spike in heatstroke cases. Health departments have advised people to stay indoors during the hottest hours of the day (12 noon to 4 PM), stay hydrated, and avoid strenuous activities.

Agriculture has also begun to feel the impact. Farmers have expressed concern about drying soil and stressed crops, particularly paddy and vegetables, which are vulnerable to extreme heat at this stage of growth. Experts warn that if the heatwave persists without rain, there could be significant implications for the upcoming agricultural season.

Meteorologists forecast that relief may arrive in the form of pre-monsoon showers later this week, but until then, the state remains under high alert. Schools in some districts have declared early summer vacations or altered school timings to ensure student safety.

This heatwave is a stark reminder of the growing impact of climate change and the urgent need for sustainable solutions. Punjab, known for its agricultural backbone, is now also becoming a victim of shifting climate patterns, making long-term planning and adaptation strategies more critical than ever.
