Chandigarh, Punjab: Punjab reels under devastating floods, claiming 43 lives so far. Nearly 2,000 villages across 23 districts are submerged, affecting over 3.84 lakh people.
In a major relief announcement, Ashok Kumar Mittal, Vice Chancellor of Lovely Professional University (LPU) and Rajya Sabha member, declared that one member from each family of those who lost their lives in the floods will be provided a job at LPU or its affiliated institutions.
Meanwhile, to ensure direct coordination between flood-affected villagers and the administration, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has instructed the appointment of a gazetted officer in every affected village. Residents can report their grievances directly to these officers.
The Chief Minister stated that rescue and relief operations are continuing at a war-footing. Due to health reasons, Mann could not accompany Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on a visit to the flood-hit areas. AAP state president and minister Aman Arora briefed Kejriwal about the flood situation in Punjab.
Local leaders, including MLA Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal and Minister Gurmeet Singh Khuddian, mentioned that the central minister Shivraj Chauhan has positively considered Punjab’s request for a ₹2,000 crore relief package. The state government has also demanded the release of ₹60,000 crore pending funds from the Centre.
So far, 20,972 people have been rescued, while 4.24 lakh acres of crops have been destroyed. Relief efforts involve 31 NDRF teams along with 29 military and paramilitary contingents.
