Chandigarh: A former national handball player from Himachal Pradesh passed away during treatment at PGI Chandigarh after sustaining critical injuries in a road accident. The deceased, identified as a resident of Una district, was involved in a collision when a speeding vehicle hit his scooter earlier this week.

According to police sources, the accident took place near Una town when the athlete was returning home. A four-wheeler allegedly lost control and crashed into his scooter, leaving him seriously injured. Locals rushed him to the Una district hospital, from where he was referred to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, for advanced care.

Despite doctors’ efforts, the player succumbed to his injuries late last night. His death has sent shockwaves across the sporting community in Himachal Pradesh. Tributes poured in from former teammates, coaches, and local sports authorities who remembered him as a dedicated athlete and a humble human being.

Local authorities have registered a case against the unidentified car driver under sections of rash and negligent driving. Efforts are underway to trace the vehicle using CCTV footage from nearby locations. The deceased had represented Himachal Pradesh in several national-level handball championships and had also been a mentor to young athletes in his district. His contribution to the sport in the region was significant, and he was actively involved in coaching after retiring from competitive play.

The state’s sports department expressed condolences and announced that they would provide all possible assistance to the bereaved family. The Himachal Pradesh Handball Association also issued a statement mourning the untimely demise and calling for stricter road safety enforcement. The body has been handed over to the family after post-mortem formalities. A final tribute and cremation will be held in Una.
