Doha, August 31, Agencies: In the first India-Taliban meet in Qatar’s Doha on Tuesday, Indian envoy Deepak Mittal held discussions with the head of Taliban’s political office Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanekzai over the safety and early return of Indian nationals from Afghanistan.
India highlighted its concerns for safety and security of the Region and the Taliban leader gave positive vibes on three issues raised by India. Indian Ambassador MIttal postulated i) Safety of Indian Nationals and minorities left in Afghanistan, ii) To facilitate return of Indian nationals to their country safely iii) Not to allow Afghan soil to be used by anti-India forces against Indian interests.
It is learnt, the meeting was held following several approaches from the Taliban functionaries during last two weeks.
This being only the initial meeting by Indian official with a senior Taliban functionary, it may need a little more such parleys before India takes its final policy decision on the new Afghan administration post US withdrawal since August 15.
