Electric Shock from Park Pole Kills Driver
Auto driver dies in Manimajra park due to electric current in streetlight pole…
Chandigarh : A tragic incident occurred late Friday night in Vikas Nagar, Manimajra, Chandigarh, where an auto driver lost his life after receiving an electric shock from a streetlight pole in a local park. The victim, Surendra, a resident of House Number 959, had stepped out of his house for a walk and entered the nearby community park when the unfortunate accident took place.
According to eyewitnesses and local residents, the incident occurred near the park’s entrance, where an iron pole connected to a streetlight was reportedly carrying live current. As soon as Surendra came in contact with the pole, he was electrocuted and collapsed on the spot. People nearby rushed to help but could not save him. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
The shocking incident has created an uproar in the locality, with residents blaming the municipal authorities and electricity department for gross negligence. Many allege that they had already complained about exposed wires and unsafe poles in the park multiple times, but no corrective action was taken. The lack of regular maintenance and safety checks on public electrical infrastructure has now cost a life.
Police officials arrived at the spot and began an investigation. The body was sent for postmortem, and authorities have assured that they will look into the matter seriously. Preliminary inquiries suggest that faulty earthing or an open wire could have led to the leakage of electricity into the metal pole.
The local administration has now ordered an inspection of all electrical poles and equipment in parks across the city. Meanwhile, the grieving family of Surendra is demanding strict action against the responsible officials and adequate compensation.
This tragic death has reignited concerns over public safety and accountability in civic infrastructure management. Residents of Manimajra and other sectors are urging the administration to act swiftly to prevent such incidents in the future. The issue has also gained traction on social media, where users are calling for a city-wide audit of street lighting and public electrical installations.
The incident stands as a stark reminder of how negligence in maintaining basic civic amenities can result in irreversible loss. Authorities are now under pressure to ensure that public spaces are safe for every citizen.
