Chandigarh  In a bold move to tackle the growing issue of drug abuse in Chandigarh, Administrator Banwarilal Purohit Kataria has taken a firm stance and urged the police to intensify their efforts, starting from the grassroots level schools. During a recent high-level meeting, Kataria expressed grave concern over the increasing number of young individuals falling prey to substance abuse and emphasized the urgent need for intervention at the earliest stage.

“Start from schools. The foundation of our youth must be protected,” Kataria told senior police officials. He pointed out that schools are not just centers of learning but the bedrock of a drug-free society. According to him, any successful drug prevention strategy must begin with awareness among children, teachers, and parents. He called for joint coordination between educational institutions and law enforcement agencies to identify potential threats and intervene in a timely manner.

He warned the police that leniency towards drug peddlers and traffickers would not be tolerated. “The future of our city is at stake. If we don’t act now, we will lose an entire generation to addiction,” he stated firmly. Kataria directed that local law enforcement intensify patrols around school areas and public spaces known for suspicious activities. He also suggested that rehabilitation and counseling centers be integrated into the education system to support those already affected.

Kataria’s concerns come amid reports of rising drug usage in school-aged children across northern India, including Chandigarh. Peer pressure, mental health issues, and easy access to narcotics are some of the major contributing factors. Experts say early exposure to drugs often leads to chronic addiction and can derail the future of many promising young minds.

To tackle this menace effectively, Kataria has also proposed the involvement of NGOs and community leaders. He believes that creating a culture of awareness and open communication is key to breaking the stigma associated with drug abuse. “We need to make our children feel supported, not punished. This is not just about law enforcement—it’s about compassion and prevention,” he emphasized.

Many parents and educators have welcomed Kataria’s proactive approach. “It’s heartening to see the administration prioritizing the health and safety of children. Drug awareness campaigns in schools can go a long way in prevention,” said Meera Malhotra, a principal of a reputed school in Chandigarh.

Meanwhile, the police department has assured that swift actions will follow. Senior officials mentioned that surveillance would be increased in high-risk zones, and drug de-addiction awareness camps would be conducted in collaboration with school authorities starting next month.

The message from Administrator Kataria is clear Chandigarh will not allow its children to fall victim to drugs. With coordinated efforts, strict policing, and a compassionate approach, the city hopes to lead the way in creating a safer, drug-free environment for its youth.
