Man detained after using a spear to kill a rhino in Kaziranga
The rhino’s estimated age was between 20 and 30 years, and the deep spear penetration that caused the injury on its left side of the stomach was the official cause of death.
GUWAHATI: A guy in Assam has been detained by the police for using a spear to kill a one-horned rhinoceros.
Naren Saikia, 47, the accused, is presently being held in judicial custody. On November 24, an attack occurred against the adult female rhino that had gone outside of the Kaziranga National Park & Tiger Reserve. November 30 saw the sighting of the carcass.
In the state, a rhino had never been killed in this way before. The park characterised the act of “hunting” the animal with a spear as strange in a statement.
The statement stated that “in accordance with the chronology of events, on November 24 at approximately 8:30 p.m., the principal accused Naren Saikia, a Lokhorakhonia resident, hurled a spear at the rhino that had ventured (out) in the area.”
It was further stated that Saikia was detained and taken into judicial custody on November 26 in response to intelligence reports obtained by Divisional Forest Officer Arun Vignesh and his team.
Despite searches, there was no sign of the rhino, even after the accused was taken into custody. In the end, a drone-assisted combing effort helped locate the carcass on Thursday at 2:30 pm close to the Teteliguri anti-poaching camp in the park. On Friday, the post-mortem was carried out.
The weapon (spear) had pierced the rhino’s skin and ribs deeply, causing an injury to the left side of the stomach. The rhino’s estimated age was between twenty and thirty years old.
