1398 – Amir Timur or Timur Lang invaded India with 92 squadrons of horses and 90,000 cavalry and reached the banks of Sindhu river near Atak city (now in Pakistan). He then attacked Delhi because its Muslim Sultanate was too weak and  tolerant towards  Hindu  society.

1857 – British troops conquered Delhi from the freedom fighters of First Independence  Movement, also  called Revolt of 1857  beginning with  Sepoy  Mutiny led by Mangal Pande.   by  The last Mughal  Badshah Bahadur Shah Zafar-II  was made its  chief and others  were  Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi, Rao Tula Ram of Rewari & Meerutt, Nanaji  Saheb Peshwa -II  of Kanpur, Tatya  Tope  of Nashik and others.

1859 – The electric range, invented by George B. Simpson of Washington, D.C., was patentede.

1892 – Wire glass was patented by Frank Schulman.

1904 – The first circular flight in an airplane was made by Orville Wright at Huffman Prairie, near Dayton, Ohio. He travelled about 4,080-ft in about 1½ minutes. (The Wright brothers’ first Flyer which made the historic flight and three more on 17 Dec 1903 in North Carolina, had been overturned by the wind and damaged after those flights. The Wrights chose not to repair it but to start with a new, heavier and stronger machine with a more powerful motor).

Born…. 1569 – Jehangir, 4th Mughal king who ruled Delhi from 1605-27. He married 9 times and was the son of famous  king  Akbar. Shah Jehan followed him to the throne.

1856 – Narayan Guru, born in Chempazh anthi village of Kerala. Sri Narayan Guru was a social reformer, led reform movement in Kerala, rejected casteism, and promoted new values of spiritual freedom and social equality.

1943 – Jayanta Hazarika, popular Assamese  song writer called Rana-Da was the younger brother of  legendary singer, musician Bhupen Hazarika. He wrote lyrics and provided music for some of Bhupen’s films also.

1948 – Mahesh Bhatt, popular  film script-writer, director, producer. He started as Assistant  to  veteran Raj Khosla and   his  father Nanabhai Bhatt, a Gujarati  film director. He started his career with  Saraansh,  Manzilen Aur Bhi Hain, Lahu Ke do Rang,  Ashiqui,  Sadak, Daddy, Dil Hai Ki Maanta Nahin (launching  his daughter Pooja Bhatt),  Gumraah, Criminal, Ham Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke, Gudia, Tamanna,  Gangster,  Voh  Lamhe,  Raaz,  Zakhm,  Zism,  Murder etc.He won  5  National Film  and  4 Filmfare  awards and  more accolades.

RIP….1933 – Annie Besant, a prominent British socialist, theosophist, freemason, and supporter of Indian and Irish self-rule.veteran freedom fighter for India.
1942 – Virangana  Kanaklata Barua, a yound child who tried to host the national flag at Goupur police station in Assam with the help of 500 people, was shot by the police station incharge.

1999 – T. R. Rajakumari,  Thanjavore born  known as  the first Dream Girl of the Tamil silver screen, ruled  for over three  decades. Was a Carnatic dancer, singer  originally. Acted in Hindi, Tamil, Kannada films like Karwan-e-Hayat, Mandharvaavathi,  Haridas,  Devdas,  Kumara Kulothug, Chanderlekha, Maya Nagari etc. She played heroine with legendary Gemini Ganeshan,  MGR and under director of famous SS Vasan. She won several accolades.

Titbits….  1976 – Playboy releases  American President   Jimmy Carter’s interview,  where he admits that he lusts for women.                                                                     You may have known…. According to estimates there are over 3,000 distinct jatis (castes or lineages) in India, wihile some sources indicatie as many as 4,000 historical castes.
