1698 – Russia’s  ruler Tzar Peter-I,  moots  taxing men’s beards. It  was  levied on Sept. 05 and enforced thru’ the police .

1887 – Emile Berliner filed for a patent for his invention of the lateral-cut, flat-disk gramophone. We know it better as the record player. Emile got the patent, but Thomas Edison got the fame (for making it work and making music with his American invention). Berliner’s legacy also lives on in his trademark of a picture of a dog listening to “his master’s voice” issuing from a gramophone.

1914 – The Passenger Pigeon (Ectopistes migratorius) became extinct as the last surviving bird of the colourful native American species of dove died at the Cincinnati Zoo.

1947 – Indian Standard Time was adopted.

1953 – On the Doomsday Clock on the Sep 1953 cover of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientist the hands were set at two minutes to midnight—the closest to nuclear Doomsday (midnight) they have ever been. On later covers, the minute hand was moved up and back over the years, reflecting increasing or lessening urgency of concern for humanity’s catastrophic destruction.

1949 – State of Tripura (a monarchy),  decides to become a  Indian Union  territory. , has an ancient history back to Mahabharta, ruled by Chandravanshi Kshatriyas. In medieval history (5th-15th century),  Raja Ratna Manikya  sought help from Bengal Sultan for getting his throne, then Raja Dhanya Manikya  in  1512, sent his General Chuchug Rai, to attack and captured the important Moughal garrison at Chittagong. British captured parts of the kingdom in 1761 and later  appointed an agent in its Darbar.  The state merged with India  as part of Assam and in 1956  became a separate  state. With an area of 10,491 SqKm area, it was the 3rd smallest state.  The process was completed in Oct. 1949, though it got full Statehood in 1972 (pic credit-indianewsreader.com)

1956 – Life Insurance Corporation of India was established and all Life Insurance Business Companies were nationalised and merged in this corporation.

1976 – Indira Gandhi asks for sweeping new powers under Emergency rule imposede in June 1975.

1985 – Discovery of Titanic wreck at a depth of about 13,000 feet.  The largest ship in history sank in the Atlasntic Ocean  on April 15,  1912,  merely 3 days after it started journey from Belfast, Southampton  to   New York City. About 1,635 people  had died in the tragedy.

2014 – Nalanda University begins its First Academic year after resurrection by Modi Govt., on the site of the World’s Oldest University, a Buddhist monastic institution that operated  between  427 to 1197 CE.

2014 – Pakistani protesters seeking the resignation of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif briefly take over the state television station and shut it down; soldiers and paramilitary forces later regained control and restored operation.

Born…. 1908 – KN Singh, actor. mostly played villain or police cop roles.  He axted in about 200 films from 1936 to 1980s. His famous films are Sunehra Sansar, Sikandar, Prithvi Vallabh, Barsaat Ki Raat,  Jwar Bhata, Baghwan, Humayun, Awara, Jaal, CID, Howrah Bridge, Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi, Amrapali, Mera Saya,  An Evening in Paris, Haathi Mere saathi, Mere Jivan Saathi, Loafer,  Woh Din Ayega, Ajooba  (1991)  etc.  He received many honors and film awards as villain.

1915 – Rajindersingh Bedi, Urdu story writer and Hindi film story writer. He wrote stories/scripts  for many Jubilee making  films  like  Badi  Behn, Daag, Abhimaan, Anupama, Satyakam,  Madhumati, Aas Ka Panchhi, Bombai Ka Baabu, Ek Chadar Maili Si, Anuradha, Dastak, Phaagun, Garam Coat, Mirza Ghalib, Devdas,  etc.   He was awarded  Sahitya Akademi  and Mirza Ghalib awards for literature and  3 Filmfare awards. 1949 – P.A. Sangma, Meghalaya  politician who became 4th Chief Minister of the state and later Lok Sabha Speaker between1 996-98. He was also Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting. He later joined NDA later and faught  President’s  election in 2012 but lost  to  Pranab Mukherjee. He was honoured  with  Padma Vibhushan in 2017. His  son Konrad Sangama  is the current  CM of  Meghalaya.

1973 – Ram Kapoor, model, TV serial actor. Known for serials Kasm Se, Bade Achhee Lagte Hain,  Dil Ki Baaten, Hamshals and some films. He was one of the highest paid  actors  in TV serials.  His net worth is estimated at Rs. 135 crores (2025).

RIP….1574 – Guru Amardas, the third Sikh Guru, who was appointed Guru at the age of 73. He became famous for his plan to divide Punjab into 22 Sikh provinces and to send out missionaries. He was highly respected for his intelligence and piety. It was said that  Mughal emperor Akbar used to take advice from him, and Akbar took food in his caste-neutral langar.

1715 – King Louis XIV of France dies after a reign of 72 years—the longest of any major European monarch.

1999 – Dr. S. Srinivasan, Director of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in Thiruvananthapuram (at an age of 58).

You may have known…. The earliest mentions of irrigation are found in Rigveda. The Veda mentions only well-style irrigation, where kupa and avata wells once dug are stated to be always full of water, from which varatra (rope strap) and cakra (wheel) pull kosa (pails) of water.
