Ex-MLA Ajnala Testifies Against Majithia in Drug Case
Claims Majithia introduced drug smuggler as ‘friend’; former PA also records statement….
Amritsar: In a significant development in the ongoing drug case investigation, former MLA Amrik Singh Ajnala has recorded his official statement against senior Akali leader Bikram Singh Majithia. Ajnala alleged that Majithia had once introduced him to a known drug smuggler, calling him a “yaar” (close friend), during a public meeting.
Ajnala, a former member of the Shiromani Akali Dal, submitted his testimony before the vigilance team. He claimed the incident took place during Majithia’s tenure as a cabinet minister, and said he had long suspected links between politicians and the drug mafia in Punjab.
“The man Majithia introduced to me was later arrested in a major drug bust. At the time, I had no idea who he was, but Majithia presented him as a friend with influence,” Ajnala told investigators.
Adding weight to the statement, Majithia’s former personal assistant (PA) has also recorded his testimony. According to sources, the former PA provided details of meetings and phone calls involving suspicious individuals, some of whom are under current investigation.
The vigilance department has intensified its probe into Majithia’s alleged connections with drug networks. Officials are also cross-verifying statements made by various witnesses. The investigation is part of a wider crackdown on political links to drug cartels in Punjab, a state long struggling with the drug menace.
This is not the first time Majithia’s name has surfaced in such allegations. In 2021, he was booked under the NDPS Act (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act) following a high-level SIT probe. Majithia, however, has consistently denied all allegations, claiming them to be politically motivated.
While Majithia has yet to respond to these fresh statements, Akali Dal leaders have dismissed them as an attempt to defame the party ahead of elections. Meanwhile, political observers believe the renewed testimony by a former MLA and a close aide could give fresh momentum to the investigation.
Vigilance officials have stated that more witnesses may be called in the coming days and further legal action will depend on corroborative evidence.
