Ahmedabad: In a major crackdown on food adulteration, authorities in Gujarat seized 4000 kilograms of fake ghee that was being prepared for sale during the upcoming festival season. The operation was carried out after officials received a tip-off about large-scale production and distribution of adulterated ghee in multiple districts.

According to food safety officials, the seized ghee contained harmful chemicals, artificial flavors, and substandard ingredients that could pose serious health risks to consumers. The racket was being operated from illegal manufacturing units, where low-cost oils and synthetic substances were being mixed to create counterfeit ghee.

During the raid, authorities found large quantities of raw materials, packaging equipment, and branded labels, indicating that the fake ghee was intended to be sold under well-known brand names. Several samples have been sent for laboratory testing, and strict action will be taken against those involved in the operation.

Initial investigations suggest that the adulterators had planned to distribute the fake ghee to retailers, sweet shops, and wholesalers ahead of the festival rush. With increased demand for ghee during Diwali and Navratri, they aimed to maximize profits by selling substandard products at market rates.

Officials have urged consumers to remain cautious and verify the authenticity of ghee before purchasing. “Fake ghee can be extremely harmful to health, leading to serious digestive and cardiovascular issues. We advise people to buy only from trusted sources and check for proper certifications,” a food safety officer stated.

Authorities have also launched an investigation to track the supply chain and identify other members of the adulteration network. Several suspects have been detained, and legal proceedings are underway.

This incident highlights the growing concern over food adulteration, especially during festive seasons when demand for dairy products surges. Consumer rights groups have called for stricter regulations, increased market surveillance, and harsher penalties for those involved in food fraud.

With the festive season approaching, officials have assured that more inspections and raids will be conducted to prevent adulterated products from reaching consumers. Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious food products to local authorities to help curb such illegal activities.
