Delhi Rains: Cold Wave, Morning Showers and Poor AQI Today
Heavy rain and thunderstorms in Delhi on December 27; air quality remains ‘very poor….
Delhi: Delhi woke up to a rainy morning on Friday, December 27, amid ongoing cold wave conditions. The showers that lashed parts of the capital early today are expected to continue, bringing down the temperatures and adding to the chilly atmosphere.
As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi’s weather conditions are set to intensify further with heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds expected today and tomorrow (December 27-28). At 7:20 AM on Friday, the temperature stood at 13°C, with the minimum expected to drop to 12°C and the maximum reaching 20°C.
Visuals from various areas like Moti Lal Nehru Marg and India Gate showed light to moderate rainfall in a foggy environment, adding to the chilly morning. The IMD forecast includes gusty winds at speeds of 30-40 km/h, accompanied by lightning and thunderstorms.
Delhi received significant rainfall early in the day. Areas like Safdarjung recorded 7.3mm of rain, Palam 6.6mm, and Lodhi Road 6.8mm. The Ridge area received a lighter rainfall of 1.8mm.
While rain may offer temporary relief, Delhi’s air quality remains a major concern. The city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) continues to be in the ‘very poor’ category, with readings of 340 in several areas including Pusa, Wazirpur, and IGI Airport. The national capital’s overall AQI has improved slightly from Thursday’s level but still remains hazardous, with Pusa recording 353 and Mundka at a severe 413.
The AQI scale indicates that readings between 301 and 400 are “very poor”, which can cause significant health effects for people, especially those with pre-existing respiratory conditions.
In addition to the weather, security measures in Delhi have been heightened following the demise of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. There is increased security around Moti Lal Nehru Marg, where Singh’s residence is located.
As the cold wave continues, the IMD has also warned of dense fog in the coming days, which could further disrupt daily activities and air travel.
