Mumbai: An Indian Navy helicopter today made an emergency landing off the Mumbai coast. The incident occurred when the advanced light helicopter (ALH) was on a routine flying mission.

Indian Navy said that three crew members of the ‘Dhruv’ chopper have been rescued. They are being medically examined as in the Navy’s helicopter case INS Shikra.

“Indian Navy ALH on a routine sortie off Mumbai ditched close to the coast. Immediate Search and Rescue ensured safe recovery of crew of three by naval patrol craft,” Indian Navy spokesperson said on its official Twitter handle.

“Ditching” refers to an emergency landing on water.

Officials said that the helicopter experienced a sudden loss of power during a sortie over the Arabian Sea. This results in a rapid loss of height. The pilot then performed a controlled ditching over water. The helicopter deployed its emergency flotation gear and efforts are on to salvage it.

An inquiry has been ordered into the incident.
