1561 – Ambroise Paré published La méthode curative des playes et fractures de la teste humaine (Treatment Method for Wounds and Fractures of the Human Head). For his innovative methods, Paré is known as “the father of modern surgery.”
1893 – Carborundum was patented by Edward G. Acheson of Monongahela. He had discovered it accidentally while trying to make artificial diamonds. He had dissolved carbon into molten corundum (a mixture of powdered coke and clay) in an electric furnace, and that yielded dark, hard, gritty crystals. He named the new material carborundum, and found it was one of the hardest industrial substances, which made it an excellent abrasive material. In 1894, he started the Carborundum Company to produce grindstones, knife sharpeners, and various abrasives.
1928 – C. V. Raman discovered a novel phenomenon of light scattering, which they called “modified scattering,” but more famously known as the Raman effect. The day is celebrated by the Government of India as the National Science Day every year.
1935 – Nylon was discovered by Dr. Wallace H. Carothers of DuPont.
1953 – DNA structure discovered by James Watson.
1996 – In the Jain hawala case, non bailable warrants of arrest were issued against 10 politicians.
2014 – Indian automaker Mahindra & Mahindra plans selling the e2o, an electric car, in Bhutan for about $11,300; vehicle exhaust is causing air pollution problems in Bhutan that threaten the country’s tourist-dependent economy.
2022 – UN Landmark climate change report warns climate change outpacing human efforts to adapt, with best-case scenario rise of 1.5C, 14% of species face “very high risk of extinction.”
