1803 – Great fire raged through Bombai (comprising seven islands), destroying almost a third of the city’s houses. Densely populated, it was devastated, and in its aftermath, authorities pushed through major changes, greatly altering the urban landscape and uprooting communities. Ironically, considering the post-fire desire for space and expansion, Mumbai today is one of the most densely populated cities in the world.
1867 – Dr. William G. Bonwill of US invented the dental mallet while watching a telegraph key sounder operate in a Philadelphia hotel.
1869 – John Menard is 1st black to make a speech in US Congress.
1874 – Baseball 1st played in England, at Lord’s Cricket Grounds.
1879 – Saccharin, the artificial sweetener, was discovered by Constantin Fahlberg. He was researching coal tar compounds. With hands unwashed since leaving his laboratory work, during a meal, he accidentally discovered its intensely sweet taste when his fingers touched his lips.
1892 – With comparative scarcity of water power in many parts of England, attention was paid to producing electricity from wind power. A small experimental plant was set up at a flour-mill near London, the wind-mill supplying sufficient power to charge a storage battery, from which a number of arc and incandescent lamps were lit nightly. Although the current obtained was small, the experiment demonstrated the possibilities.
1900 – German chemist Felix Hoffmann was issued a U.S. patent for “Acetyl Salicylic Acid”. It was marketed as Apirin, the familiar pain reliever, which at the time was a trademarked name. It was first sold in Germany in powder form, from 1 May 1899, and later in the more convenient tablet form, from 1 Jan 1915.
1932 – The neutron was discovered by Dr. James Chadwick.
1942 – J S Hey discovers radio emissions from the Sun.
2014 – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is proposing to revise food labels by providing realistic serving sizes, emphasizing calories and sugar amounts, and breaking down fat listings into ‘good’ and ‘bad’ fats.
2019 – Pakistan shoots down an Indian fighter jet and captures the pilot, further escalating tensions in
the Kashmir region.
2022 – Countries sanction Russia for its invasion of Ukraine; EU closes its airspace to Russian planes, Russian banks excluded from worldwide Swift payment system, Sweden sends arms to Ukraine.
2022 – EU warns Russian invasion of Ukraine means Europe facing major humanitarian crisis, 18 million Ukrainians displaced with four million refugees fleeing the country.

1931 – Chandra Shekhar Azad. He was an Indian revolutionary who reorganised the Hindustan Republican Association under the new name of Hindustan Socialist Republican Association. He is considered to be the mentor of Shaheed Bhagat Singh.
