Phnom Penh (Cambodia): Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar is set to participate on Sunday in the 17th East Asia Summit which comprises ten ASEAN member states and its eight dialogue partners.
The East Asia Summit is the Indo-Pacific’s premier forum for strategic dialogue.
The ten ASEAN member states are Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines and Vietnam and its eight dialogue partners are India, China, Japan, Republic of Korea, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Russia.
The East Asia Summit is the only leader-led forum at which all key Indo-Pacific partners meet to discuss political, security and economic challenges facing the region. It has an important role to play in advancing closer regional cooperation.
ASEAN leads the forum, and the chair position rotates between ASEAN Member States annually.
In 2021 East Asia Summit members represented 53.1 per cent of the world’s population and accounted for 59.5 per cent of global GDP worth an estimated US$ 57.2 trillion.
During the Summit, the leaders issue statements on topical issues, to signal political will for framing policy responses and to provide a basis for cooperation.
The 16th East Asia Summit was held on October 27, 2021, chaired by Brunei Darussalam via videoconference (due to the Covid-19 pandemic).
During the 2021 East Asia Summit, leaders discussed key regional issues including safe, affordable and equitable access to Covid-19 vaccines, health security, the South China Sea, the situations in Myanmar and Hong Kong, the Korean Peninsula, climate change, cybersecurity and countering violent extremism.
They later adopted three statements in 2021 on: Sustainable Recovery, Economic growth through tourism recovery and on Mental health cooperation.
Cambodia will handover Chairmanship of the East Asia Summit to Indonesia after the Leaders’ Summit. (UNI)
