98% CCTV Cameras in Punjab Tehsil Offices Non-Functional
DCs Directed to Fix Cameras and Conduct Surprise Checks by January 31……
Chandigarh/Ludhiana : Nearly 98% of the CCTV cameras installed in Punjab’s sub-registrar and joint registrar offices to monitor public dealings and curb illegal practices in property registrations are non-functional. A recent check revealed that out of 180 offices, only those in Ropar, Amritsar, and Dhuri had operational cameras.
Installed in April 2023 at a cost of ₹2 crore, the 720 IP-based cameras were meant to provide real-time access to senior officials. However, poor maintenance, alleged deliberate shutdowns by staff, and possible issues with internet or power supply have rendered them ineffective.
Additional Chief Secretary (Revenue) Anurag Verma has instructed Deputy Commissioners (DCs) to ensure all cameras are operational by January 31 and to conduct daily surprise checks based on CCTV feeds. The role of Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs) in monitoring lapses is also under review.
This directive follows complaints about harassment and delayed services at registrar offices, prompting the ACS to demand punctuality and transparency from officials. Verma emphasized that the cameras were installed to protect visitors from inconvenience and ensure corruption-free property registrations.
