Sikkim Sports Minister KN Lepcha launches ‘Road to Tokyo Olympics’

Gangtok, Jun 23 (UNI) Minister Sports & Youth Affairs Kunga Nima Lepcha launched a month-long ‘Road to Tokyo Olympics,’ here at the White Memorial Hall, on Wednesday.
He was joined by Secretary Sports Raju Basnet, President Sikkim Olympics Kuber Bhandari ( Secretary Excise), Arjuna awardee Boxer Jas lall Pradhan and Director Doma Tshering.
‘ It is a very important event. Tarundeep Rai of Sikkim is going to participate in Archery. We congratulate him. Due to adverse situation, the event of 2020 is being held now. We wish for maximum medals to our contingent. We should all support. Tarundeep Rai from Sikkim is going to participate in Archery.At the instance of Central Govt the mont h-long Road to Tokyo Olympics has been launched here today,’ said Minister Lepcha.
Minister expressed hope that Sikkim-born ArcherTarundeep wins this time and also other Indian players. The Chief Minister has already wished him all the best and granted Rs 5 Lakhs. Let all the deities of Sikkim bless him for a great win in the Olympics,’ said the Minister.
He mentioned Milkha Singh and Dhayan Chand Olympians, they made the country win earlier. has appealed to the youth to participate in quiz competitions and debates to be organized.
Secretary Sports Department, Raju Basnett, highlighted the importance of the Road to Tokyo Olympics. ‘The programme from today to 23rd July ‘21 will consist of information about Olympics and Olympians.In addition Quiz,Debates,Dialogues and Talk shows will be hosted.Selfie corners are there.Felicitation of parents of Tarundeep , other Athletes and Parents is on the schedule,with anticipated Fan engagement,’ said Secretary Basnett.The Quiz and Debates would be conducted Online.
Mary Kom is taking part in boxing.Javelin Thrower NirajChopra is there. It is very significant for the Country and of course Sikkim. To make people of Sikkim aware of Olympics.Indian contingent of 100 Sports persons scheduled to participate in 15 disciplines out of 33 Shooting,Weight lifting,Boxing and more,’ added Basnett.
Doma Tshering Director Sports,Zigmee Lepcha,Deputy Director Coaching and other officers were also present.
