Simranjit Singh Mann of SAD (A) shocks AAP in Sangrur LS poll
Sangrur (Punjab): In the bye election to Lok Sabha, Sangrur voters rejuvenated the sagging old hawk of Punjab politics, by sending Simranjit Singh Mann to Parliament. Known as sympathizer of the ‘Khalistan movement’ in the border state, his victory is likely to upstage hawkish elements even in the national scene.
“Politics will change and like in the past, I will keep striving hard for the welfare of residents. Simranjit Singh Mann, SAD (A) President vowed after defeating ruling AAP candidate by a margin of about 7000 votes, (polling 253,154 votes Vs AAP candidate Gurmel Singh’s 2,47,332 votes), whereas main parties were rejected squarely by the voters. Congress candidate came 3rd and main Akali Dal (Badal) was relegated to mere 5th spot.
He also credited the slain singer Shubhdeep Singh Moosewala for his victory, as the state government had banned his last song SYL. causing resentment among his followers in Punjab.
Sangrur constituency was represented by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann in 2014 and 2019 parliamentary elections on AAP ticket. He vacated the seat recently, after he was selected for top political office.
