Yellow Alert for Rain Issued in Punjab Today
Temperatures Dip Below Normal; Pathankot Remains Hottest; Dams Still Only 50% Full….
Punjab : Residents across Punjab woke up to cloudy skies and refreshing weather on Wednesday, as the Meteorological Department issued a Yellow Alert for rain across several districts. After days of intense humidity and soaring temperatures, the change in weather brought much-needed relief. However, even with the rainfall, concerns persist—especially about the low water levels in the state’s dams, which currently remain only 50% full.
While rain activity was scattered and light in most parts, the overall temperature across the state has dropped below normal. This dip in mercury has given temporary relief to both residents and farmers struggling with heat stress. Still, despite the rain, Pathankot remained the hottest city in Punjab, recording temperatures above the seasonal average, though still slightly cooler than previous days.
Meteorological officials say that the Yellow Alert suggests a possibility of moderate rainfall with thunderstorms in isolated areas. District administrations have been asked to remain alert, especially in regions prone to waterlogging or flash flooding. The pre-monsoon showers are expected to extend into the next couple of days, which could further bring down the temperatures and ease water scarcity—if the rainfall is substantial.
However, a major concern looms over Punjab’s dam storage. Despite recent rains, the main reservoirs are only about half full, raising fears about irrigation and drinking water supply in the coming months. Experts are calling for efficient water use and conservation, particularly in agricultural regions where water demand is already high.
Farmers, on the other hand, are hoping for consistent and heavier rainfall soon. “We need proper monsoon showers for our crops. This light rain is good, but it’s not enough for fields,” said a farmer from Hoshiarpur.
Environmentalists have also pointed out that climate patterns in Punjab are becoming increasingly unpredictable. Fluctuating temperatures, delayed rains, and erratic weather are signs of larger climate shifts, they say.
As the week progresses, people in Punjab are advised to keep umbrellas handy and stay updated with weather alerts. With the Yellow Alert in place, today’s rain may be a sign of more significant monsoon activity to come—but for now, the state continues to balance between heat, hope, and half-full dams.
