Yamuna Water Level Nears Danger Mark in Delhi
Authorities take precautions as river rises....
New Delhi : The water level of the Yamuna River in Delhi rose to 205.22 metres at the Old Railway Bridge by 9 am on Saturday, approaching the danger mark of 205.33 metres, an official said.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have instructed all concerned agencies to take precautionary measures to handle a potential flood-like scenario, as water levels are expected to rise further.
“The river’s rise is primarily due to high volumes of water being released from the Wazirabad and Hathnikund barrages every hour,” said an official from the central flood room.
According to the flood control department, the Hathnikund barrage is releasing about 46,968 cusecs of water per hour, while Wazirabad barrage is discharging 44,970 cusecs per hour.
The Old Railway Bridge serves as a key observation point to track the river’s flow and assess potential flood risks. The warning mark for Delhi is 204.50 metres, the danger mark is 205.33 metres, and evacuation procedures begin at 206 metres.
Typically, water released from upstream barrages takes 48 to 50 hours to reach Delhi. Even relatively lower discharges from upstream are now causing the river to rise, bringing levels dangerously close to the warning threshold in the city.
