PM Modi’s hybrid BRICS summit participation is unclear
There is some uncertainty about Prime Minister Modi’s participation in the BRICS summit, given that it will be held in a hybrid format. After Russian President Vladimir Putin declared his participation virtually, sources aren’t ruling out a virtual appearance by India’s Prime Minister.
NEW DELHI: After Russian Federation President Vladimir Putin announced that he would be participating digitally, the highly anticipated BRICS Summit, which is slated to take place in Johannesburg (August 22–24), is now being held in hybrid mode.
Sergey Lavrov, Russia’s foreign minister, will be attending to represent Russia in person.
Will PM Modi consider attending digitally as well as in person as a result of this hybrid mode?
Possibly today, according to reports.
Some attendees choose the virtual mode while an event is in hybrid mode. It is currently unknown whether PM Modi would physically attend the Summit, according to sources.
On Thursday, the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ meeting was virtually held. Dr. Jaishankar, the minister of external affairs, as well as his counterparts from China, South Africa, Russia, and Brazil participated.
The BRICS group of countries has received interest from around 40 countries, according to South African ambassador Anil Sooklal on Thursday.
In addition to the 22 nations that have officially applied, many others, particularly those in the Global South, are eager to join the BRICS. Interest has also been shown by Argentina, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Cuba, the Congo, Comoros, Gabon, and Kazakhstan.
Regarding the BRICS Summit, which will take place next month, a number of rumours concerning President Putin’s attendance in person were put to rest on Wednesday.
Using a video conference, President Putin will participate in the BRICS Summit. His involvement will be complete. Lavrov, meanwhile, will be present in person, according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Wednesday.
The 15th BRICS Summit, which will take place in the near future, will mark the first summit to take place in person since the pandemic’s start. This time, South Africa is holding the presidency, and in a readout, the office of President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa stated that numerous consultations regarding the Summit were held.
The leaders of India, China, Brazil, and South Africa will be present at the summit. President Putin will not be present at the Summit, as agreed with. Lavrov will represent Russia, according to a statement from President Cyril Ramaphosa’s spokesman Vincent Magwenya.
