Widespread protests in Bihar against Agneepath recruitment scheme

Patna: Two passenger trains were torched, private property and markets vandalised, and railway services affected on Thursday as thousands of youths in several Bihar districts protested against the Agneepath scheme announced by the Central government for recruitment in all three wings of Indian defence forces.
The large-scale protests, which entered the second day, had started in Bihar a day after the Central government announced the scheme on Tuesday.
Despite the district administration’s efforts to restore peace, violence and arson continued as job aspirants were anguished over the announcement of the new recruitment scheme.
In Saran district, a large number youths gathered at Chhapra railway station and torched a passenger train.
They also blocked movement of trains passing through Chhapra station. Protesters also damaged private property and nearby markets to vent their anger. They did not spare even Ambulances and pelted stones at security forces.
Inspector of Railway Protection Force (RPF) Mukesh Kumar Singh said security forces resorted to firing in the air to control the mob of. The situation has now been brought under control, he claimed.
In Gopalganj District, protesters torched several bogies of a passenger train at Sidhwalia station. Passengers ran helter-skelter to save their lives as protesters went berserk in a fit of rage against the new recruitment scheme in Army.
In Nawada district, protesters torched the BJP office and damaged furniture and other properties there. They said the new recruitment scheme was not acceptable to them. (UNI)
