Mohammed Shami retirement rumours Shami slams retirement talks Shami comeback Duleep Trophy India fast bowler Shami news Shami not selected Asia Cup 2025 Shami injury update Indian cricket team selectionNew Delhi : Out-of-favour Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has strongly dismissed rumours of his retirement, reaffirming his commitment to competitive cricket. Taking a tongue-in-cheek dig at his critics, the 34-year-old said he is determined to continue working hard regardless of national team selection.

Shami, who played a crucial role in India’s 2023 Champions Trophy triumph, has struggled with recurring injuries since then. He last represented India in the World Test Championship final against Australia in 2023 and was recently overlooked for the tour of England, with the BCCI medical team declaring him unfit to bowl long spells.

Making his comeback, Shami featured for East Zone in the Duleep Trophy quarter-final, which began on 28 August. The red-ball tournament, known for showcasing India’s best domestic talent, marks his first competitive outing since the IPL 2025.

Despite being part of the domestic circuit again, Shami was not selected for the Asia Cup 2025, a T20I event starting on 9 September in the UAE.

“Why do you want me to retire? I am fit, I am bowling, and I will keep playing. Selection is not in my hands, but my fire is still burning,” Shami said.

His statement reflects both his frustration over being sidelined and his determination to continue proving his worth at the highest level.
