Wheat Procurement Gains Momentum in Punjab, Over 24 LMT Procured Out of 28 LMT Arrival
Punjab: Punjab’s wheat procurement season is progressing at a strong pace, with the state government moving steadily towards achieving its procurement target. Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak on Sunday visited Dana Mandi Tanda to review the ongoing procurement operations. Accompanied by MLA Jasvir Singh Raja Gill, the minister stated that out of the 28 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of wheat arrivals in mandis across the state, more than 24 LMT has already been procured.
The minister formally initiated procurement by purchasing the crop of a farmer, Jaila, from village Basti. He emphasized that the government has made comprehensive arrangements in mandis to ensure that farmers do not face any inconvenience while selling their produce. He reiterated the government’s commitment to procuring every single grain brought by farmers.
As per the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of ₹2,585 per quintal, more than ₹647 crore has already been directly credited into farmers’ bank accounts. The minister highlighted that payments are being made within 48 hours of procurement and that the lifting of procured wheat is also gaining pace.
Directing officials of procurement agencies, Kataruchak instructed them to ensure a hassle-free experience for farmers in mandis. He added that adequate arrangements for gunny bags (bardana), labour, and transportation have been ensured. The minister also urged farmers to refrain from burning wheat stubble and instead adopt in-field management using machinery provided by the Agriculture Department.
Addressing the issue of crop damage due to recent unseasonal rains, the minister said that special girdawari (crop assessment) has been ordered and that the state government will compensate farmers for their losses. He assured that no affected farmer will be left unsupported.
MLA Jasvir Singh Raja Gill stated that the Punjab government will ensure smooth procurement and timely lifting of produce, just as it did last year. He added that under the leadership of CM Mann, the government continues to prioritize farmers’ interests and ensure prompt payments. He also directed administrative officials to carry out procurement operations efficiently and on schedule.
In Hoshiarpur district, a total of 78 mandis have been set up, including 65 permanent and 13 temporary ones. The district is expecting an arrival of around 3,16,000 metric tonnes of wheat this season. Authorities have completed all necessary arrangements to handle the expected inflow.
Overall, the Punjab government’s proactive approach and efficient procurement system indicate that the state is well on track to achieve its wheat procurement target of 122 LMT this season.
