US jobless claims hover at around 300,000 for 4th straight week
Washington: Jobless claims in the United States hovered at around 300,000 for a fourth week in a row, the US Labor Department reported on Thursday in data that indicated little change in the country’s tight employment market.
Jobless claims came in at 231,000 last week, after staying at 229,000 for the three previous weeks, the Labor Department said.
“These numbers are slowly picking up but anything below 300,000 is still very healthy [for employment],” economist Adam Button said in a comment posted on the Forex Live forum. “There is no sign of any significant layoff activity and it’s still a tight jobs market.”
Unemployment in the United States reached a record high of 14.8% in April 2020, with the loss of some 20 million jobs in the aftermath of the coronavirus breakout.
Jobs recovery has been strong over the past 18 months, with the unemployment rate staying at 3.6% since April.
An unemployment rate of 4% or below is regarded by the Federal Reserve as maximum employment. (UNI/SPUTNIK)
