1611 – The Mughal ruler Jahangir married Mahrunnisa, later named Nur Jahan (pic credit-ar.inspired pencil.com).
1895 – The
playwright, poet, and novelist Oscar Wilde is convicted of “committing acts of gross indecency with other male persons” and sentenced to serve two years in prison.
1935 –Legendary athlete Jesse Owens of Ohio State University breaks three world records and ties a fourth at the Big Ten Conference Track and Field Championships in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He later won 4 Gold Medals in Berlin Olympics in August 1936.(it is believed Chancellor Adolf Hitler didn’t honour Owens but they both waved towards each other).
1961 – The formal announcement of an American lunar landing was made by President John F. Kennedy speaking to the Congress: “I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth. No single space programme in this period will be more impressive to mankind, or more important in the long-range exploration of space; and none will be so difficult or expensive to accomplish.”
1999 – The Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee declares India will take all possible steps to punish the infiltrators
in Kargil.
2007 – The Sri Lankan government granted in-principle permission on the citizenship of Tamil refugees.
Born…. 1886 – Rash Behari Bose, a revolutionary who played an important
role in the organization of ‘Gadar’ and ‘Azad Hind Fauj’ against British rule. Not only within the country but also in other countries, he conducted revolutionary activities against the British government and tried to bring freedom to India. Rash Behari went to Japan, and established the Indian Independence League and later the Azad Hind Fauj. Although his efforts to liberate the country were not successful, his role in the freedom struggle of the country was important.
1889- Igor Sikorsky, Russian-American pioneer of aviation in both helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft, born in Kiev,
Ukraine. He was given the highest Russian aviation award in 1912 but shifted to the US in 1919 opposing the Russian Revolution (pic credit-mix.com).
1972 – Karan Johar, film director, producer, costume designer, actor, and television personality who works in Hindi films. Johar made his directorial debut with the blockbuster romance Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) which earned him the Filmfare Awards for Best Director and Best Screenplay.
RIP…. 1606 – Guru Arjun Dev, 5th Sikh Guru, a spiritual leader of Sikhs and Hindus alike He was a trea
sure of celestial knowledge and spiritual excellence. He substantially contributed towards the welfare of the society. He was mertyred at the instructions of mughal emperor Jahangir for not converting to Islam.
1998 – Laxmikant of the famous Laxmikant–Pyarelal duo. Both are considered among the most successful composers in Hindi film history and composed music for about 750 Hindi movies from 1963 to 1998, working for almost all notable filmmakers, including Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, B.R. Chopra, Shakti Samanta, Manmohan Desai, Yash Chopra, Boney Kapoor, J. Om Prakash, Raj Khosla, L V Prasad, Subhas
h Ghai, K Viswanath, and Manoj Kumar.
2005 – Sunil Dutt, veteran film actor and politician. He started his career as an announcer in Radio Ceylon, the oldest radio station in South Asia. Dutt became extremely popular as an announcer. He had a lot of interest in acting and soon made a mark in this area. His first film was Railway Station released in 1955 and film Mother India (1957) was a big hit. This film made him a big Bollywood star. He later married popular heroin Nargis Dutt. Veteran actyor Sanjay Dutt is their son. In 1982 he was appointed Sherriff of Bombay and he fought Lok Sabha elections five times between 1984 to 2004 on Congress ticket from North West Bombay. He appeared in about 80 films including Neel Kamal, Khandan, Sujatra, Waqt, Hamraaj, Kilan, Mera Saya, Reshma Aur Shera, Padosan etc. He won Padmas Shri award, 3 Filmfares and Filmfare Lifetime Achievement award in 1995.

You may have known…. The state of Meghalaya is the wettest inhabited place of earth. The state normally gets over 1,555.4 mm of rainfall between June 01 and July 31 evey year.
