1420 – The Jews were expelled from Austria and Syria.n Though the Jews were living in Austria during 3rd Century CE along  Vienna  and  Denube River,  they  were  penalised   and   punished for suspsion of  collaborating with  enemy  Hussite  forces: they  were  expelled  and  their  assets,  funds  confiscated..

1805 – Governor-General Lord Welledgeley arranged for a permanent provision for the Mughal emperor  Shah alam II,  of Delhi.

1903 – The European capital cities of Paris and Rome were linked by telephone for first time.

1905 – Thomas A. Edison was issued a patent for a “Process of Duplicating Phonographic Records”. {On the same day of 23 May he was also issued patents for – “Device for Feeding Pulverulent Material”{1911}; “Phonograph or Talking Machine” (1916); and “Production of Thin Metal Sheets or Foils” (1922}).

1933 – Gertrude Ederle and C. Kelsey were granted a patent for a “paddle-driven swimming device”. On the same date, Max Wasserberg received a patent for a “beach and lawn chair”.

1940 – R.V. Jones, a British  scientist with Aircraft   Intelligence, tells the government that intersecting radio beams could guide Luftwaffe bombers to their targets (pic credit-homepages.abdn.ac.uk).

1947 – The U.K. Cabinet took the historic step of agreeing to Lord Mountbatten’s proposal for the Partition of India into two states on religious  criteria, one  for the Muslims and the other for  Hindus,  giving the option  to smaller  Riyasats  to  choose either of the two parts  (map credit-vivdmap.com).

1962 – A 12-year-old boy’s severed arm was reattached in the world’s first successful replantation of a human limb in Boston. The arm had been severed three inches below the shoulder.

1984 – Bachendri Pal (30) became the first Indian woman to conquer Everest, the world’s highest peak (at  29,032 ft. or 8,848..86 m  height),  accomplishing her mission ‘Everest 84’. (pic credit-ar.inspiredpencil.com).

2008 – India successfully test-fired the surface-to-surface missile Prithvi-2.

2015 – Myanmar President Thein Sein implements a population control law requiring women to wait three years between children; critics believed  the law can be used to oppress women as well as minority religion and ethnic populations in the country.                                                                                                            2016 – Chinese archaeologists announce findings of earliest use of Barley in China to make Beer, Shaanxi province 3400-2900 BC.

2016 – The Indian Space Research Institute (ISRO) launched the space shuttle RLV-TD made entirely in India from Sriharikota Space Center in Andhra Pradesh.

2019 – The Bharatiya Janata Party wins re-election in a landslide over (winning 303 Lok Sabha  seats)  the opposition Congress Party, world’s largest-ever democratic election with over 600 million voters.

2019 – Prototype of new high-speed train that will float above the track, capable of travelling 600km an hour (370 mph), unveiled by Chinese Railway Rolling Stock Corporation in Qingdao (pic credit-seelao.com).

2022 – New York City removes its last public payphones in Midtown Manhattan, they will become part of a museum display.

2022 – US President Joe Biden says for the first time he would be willing to use force to  defend Taiwan against   any Chinese invasion.

Born…. 1906 – General Pran Nath Thapar, the fourth Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army. He participated in World War II and Sino-Indian War on 1962.

1919 – Gayatri Devi, the third Maharani consort of Jaipur from 1940 to 1949 through her marriage to Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II. She became a successful politician in the Swatantra Party. Gayatri Devi was also famous for her classical beauty and became a fashion icon in adulthood.

1965 – Woorkeri Venkat Raman, prolific Indian scorer, got 1089 runs in one season 1988-89 including a double and triple century each. Also a slow left-arm bowler. He played 11 Tests, 27 ODIs.  Head Coach of Indian Women’s team from Jan. 2019 to May 2021. He was the batting  coach of Kings Xi Punjab in 2013 and KKR  in 2014 when they won the IPL trophy. RIP…. 1975 – Lt Gen P. S. Bhagat, was a Lt General in the Indian Army and a recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy. The Victoria Cross was conferred on him for his actions in the Sudan Theatre during World War II.
