1774 – British Commander Colonel Chapman defeated Rohilla’s army and captured Ruhelkhand.

1827 – William Rowan Hamilton established the wave theory of light, which gives that light is a form of energy that travels in waves (pic credit-Mac Tutor History).

1896 – The first movie shown to a paying theatre audience in the U.S. had a series of short scenes. Included  the film shorts with a ballet scene, a burlesque boxing match, waves on a sea shore, and a comic allegory The Monroe Doctrine. (The Doctrine  is a United States foreign policy position that opposes any foreign interference  originally concerning European colonialism or  interference in the  affairs of the Americas by foreign powers,  considered a  hostile act against the United States. The doctrine was central to American grand strategy in the 20th century  and even today).

1940 – The leak-proof flashlight battery was patented (pic credit-worthpoint.com). 

1981 – Artificial skin was first transplanted in the U.S. It included a combination of cowhide, shark cartilage and plastic. This material makes possible the treatment of burn patients whose injuries might otherwise be fatal.

2013 – West Indian cricketer, Chris Gayle, smashes the fastest century in history in 30 balls. Opening   batsman is  known for big shots, has several records to his credit.

Born…. 1504 – Guru Angad Devji, 2nd  Sikh Guru  who developed and propagated Gurumukhi script and compiled Guru Nanak Dev ji Bhajans. (pic credit-SikhiWiki)

1563 – William Shakespeare.   Known as the greatest  novelist of drama, tragedy  prose,  a playwright of Engliosh literature. Wrote The Tragedy of Macbeth, Romeo &  Juliet etc.

1969 -Manoj Bajpayee. Bollywood actor. Known for his roles in films Bandit Queen, Daud, Pinjar, Rajneeti, Gangs of Wasseypur, Aks, Satya etc.  He has won 4 National and 4 Filmfare awards apart from several other accolades. Born in Belwa (Bihar) his ancestors  belonged to Rae Bareli  (U.P.)  Educated in Satywati College, Delhi, he struugled  to get into National School of Drama,  Delhi  but could’t get  in.  He debuted in  1994 thru’ Drohkaal, Bandit Queen  and  later won National Film Award for his role in  Satya by Ram Gopal Verma.

RIP….     1968 – Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, counted among the greatest singers and musicians of India. He was a master of wonderful melodious voice. Listening to his singing, the listeners lost their senses. Music connoisseurs from every corner of India used to send invitations to Khan Saheb to sing. Whether royalty or modest school student, Khan’s velvety voice mesmerized everyone. He was  the owner of the heart-touching voice, gave a new vibe and tone to Thumri  through his innovative style. According to experts, Ustad took thumri out of the bounds of the well-known genre due to his experimental music.

1973 – Dhirendra Prsad Verma, a famous poet and writer of Hindi and Brajbhasha. Apart from being an excellent administrator of the Hindi department, he was also an ideal professor. He wrote on Hindu Dharma, Children’s literature,  poems,  history and  science.

1992 – Satyajit Ray, one of the world’s greatest film personalities of the twentieth century. Besides giving a new direction to the films of the realistic stream, such as literature, painting, etc. he also showed his talent in other genres. He used to do many work related to film production himself. These include direction, cinematography, screenplay, background music, art direction, editing, etc. Apart from being a filmmaker, he was also a story writer, painter and film critic. Ray directed 37 films in his life, including feature films, documentaries, and short films. His first film ‘Pather Panchali’ received a total of eleven international awards including the “Best Human Document” award at the Cannes Film Festival. Satyajit Ray, who gave new recognition to Indian films in the world, is honuored with Padma Shri (1958), Padma Bhushan (1965), Padma Vibhushan (1976) and Ramon Magsaysay Award (1967) in addition to Bharat Ratna (1992).

You may have known….  Jadav Payeng, affectionately known as the “Forest Man of India,” stands as a beacon of hope and resilience in the fight against climate change. His remarkable  journey began in 1979 when, at just 16 years old, (in Jorhat , Assam) he was profoundly affected by the sight of snakes dying on a barren sandbar due to drought. This heart-wrenching experience ignited his passion for environmental restoration, leading him to transform 1,390 acres of desolate land into the thriving Molai Forest.He lives in his own forest, which houses rhinos, tigers, deer, apes and elephants.
