1786 – In British Parliament, a member  Berk alleged 11 corruption charges against the first  Governor GeneralWarren Hastings  of Fort Williams, Bengal Presidency in India..                                  1828 – Casparus van Wooden patented chocolate milk powder (Amsterdam).

1899 – A gas burner was patented by Benjamin F. Jackson, a black American inventor (No. 622,482). His design improved the equal distribution of air under pressure to ensure  complete  combustion  of the fuel gas (pic credit-www.findagrave.com).

1905 – Earthquake  in Kangra (Himachal Pradesh),  kills 20,000 (pic credit-Le Petit Parisien, France)

1918 – Battle of Somme (France)  ends. (It was one of the largest battles of World War I, in which more than1,000,000 men were wounded or killed, making it one of the bloodiest battles in human history. The British and French forces were arraigned opposite the Germans).

1926 – Martial law is declared in Calcutta as communial  rioting continues. among Hindus and Muslims (opposing Ram Navmi processions).

1932 – Professor C. Glen King of the University of Pittsburgh isolated vitamin C, a medical and scientific breakthrough, after five years of effort.                                                     1968 – Martin Luther King, Jr., a leader of the American civil rights movement, was assassinated by James Earl Ray.                                                       1944 – Battle of Kohima: A turning point in the Second World war that halted Japan’ s attempt to enter into Asia (map credit-britannica.com).                                                                                                                                                            1997 – World Bank Atlas for 1997 put India as world’s fifth largest economy in terms of Purchasing Power Parity (PPP)  estimated  at $ 1,318 Trillion.                                                                  2012–German Nobel Laureate, Günter Grass, publishes controversial poem  that claims Israel is plotting to wipe out Iran. He was an established writer, journalist, novelist,  playwrite, graphic artist, political activist. Born…. 1904 – Kundan Lal Saigal, golden voiced singer, legend in his lifetime, actor and film maker. (His memorable hits include ‘Ek Bangla Bane Nayara’,  ‘Babul more…’,  ‘Diya Jalao’ etc).

1932 – Bapu Nadkarni, cricketer (economical Indian slow left-armer 1956-68).   India’s  dreaded  slow left-arm  spinner (1956-68). and the most economical  bowler of Indian  cricket.  He has a records  of 32-24-32-0  and  34-24-24-1 in 1960-61  series against Pakistan  in Kanpur,  Delhi  respectively. He also delivered  131 dot-balls over  114-minute bowling  spell. He also scored 52* and 122* in Test cricket and  283* in a Ranji Trophy match for Bombay. Was also  member of BCCI for some time.  Bapu  was  awarded  CK Nayudu  Lifetime  Acheivement  award  in 2012 (pic credit-news18.com).                                                                                                                                                                        1954 – Parveen Babi (Sultana Wali Mohammad Khanji),  the most  glamorous   Bollywood  film actress, fashion model and  popular as a Sex Symbol  in films during 1970– 80 and was one of the highest-paid actresses of her times. She did about 70  films, many  opposite veteran  Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna  viz., Deewar,  Mazboor, Kala Sona,  Suhaag, Amar Akbar Anthony, Kala Pathar, Kranti, Kalia,  Namak Halal, Irada etc. She died at young age of  50 in  January 2005.

1957 – El Chapo (Joaquín Guzmán Loera), the famous drug lord of Maxico.  Powerful leader of Sinaloa cartel, has 4 wives and net worth of $ 1 billion.

1972 – Lisa Ray, Canadian-Indian  model and actress. Did modelling for Bombnay Dying and Lakme brands during 1960s. She did films like Hanste Khelte, Defendor, I Can’t Think Straight, Water, Kasoor etc. A Cancer-survivor, she is a holistic Health promotor and stem-cell therapy  activist. RIP…. 1987 – Sachchidanand Hiranand Vatsyayan ‘Agyey’.  Freedom fighter who was prisioned in 1929  for helping  Shaheed Bhagat Singh  (HSRA). Kushinagar (U.P.) born  famous writer, poet, novelist, literary critic, and journalist. He did numerous experiments in Hindi literature and considered as the pioneer of the Prayogavaad (experimentalism) movements in modern Hindi literature. He was editor of Everyman’s Weekly published by Jayprakash Narayan (1973-74),  Navbharat Times  1977-80 and  founded Dinman  weekly in 1965. He was awarded Sahitya Akademy Award (1964),  Jnanpeeth Award  (1978) and the internationally reputed Golden Wreath Award for  setting new trands in poetry.

You may have known…. Indian mathematician  Srinivasa Ramanujan  (Aiyanger)  calculated the exact  calculated the value of pi.  and used in circular, astronomical calculations in the Shatapatha Brahmana (ca. 4th century BC) use a fractional approximation of 339/108 ≈ 3.139 (an accuracy of 9×10−4). Other Indian sources by about 150 BC treat π as √10 ≈ 3.1622).  The symbol  Pi (π)  is taken from Babylonian  books and later by 18th century mathematicians. Ramanujan’s works  on Pure Mathamatics  were recognised by making him  the youngest  Fellow of Royal Society  of England.
