(National Mathematics Day: Celebrated in India to honor Srinivasa Ramanujan).

1882 – The first string of electric lights decorating a Christmas tree was created for his home by Edward H. Johnson, an associate of Thomas Edison. Previously, trees had been decorated with wax candles

1939 – When Britain declared war against the Germans it appealed for help from all political parties. Congress put up some conditions which in other words were the immediate transfer of power. The Viceroy promised to give due consideration to the suggestions of each party and that the dominion status would be given after the war. Congress in order to pressurize the Govt. boycotted all ministries and started a civil disobedience movement and eventually resigned. Jinnah declared 22nd Dec 1939 as “Day of Deliverance”.

1939 – Young  UP  leader Chaudhary Charan Singh resigned from the Viceroy’s Executive Council in protest against India’s involvement in WWII without Indian consent. Charan Singh rose to the  Prime Minister’s post in 1979.

1968 – The first U.S. live telecast from a manned spacecraft in outer space was transmitted from Apollo VIII. The earth The craft was 139,000 miles from earth, and the latter appeared as a blurred ball of light.

1987 – U.S. scientists say a single gene may decide the sex of a baby.                                                                                                        2000 – Three Army Jawans die in an attack by a suicide squad of Lakshar-e-Taiba at the Red Fort in Delhi leading to a 45-minute gun-battle (pic credit-livehindustan.com).            2023 – UN Security Council resolution votes to speed up delivery of desperately needed aid for Gaza 13-0 with Russia and the US abstaining.

Born…. 1666 – Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth and final Sikh Guru  of  Sikhs  and follower Hindus, who established Khalsa Panth on Baisakhi Day in 1699, to protect Hindus, ladies and weaker sections from the cruelty of Mughals, who had brutally  killed earlier; 5th Guru Arjun Dev, 9th  Guru Tegh Bahadur, his sons Sahebzada   Fateh Singh, Jujhar Singh, and thousands of his followers who refused to adopt muslim religion. He  ordered that in future  Guru Granth Sahib will be the living Guru for Sikhs and selected Panj Piyaras from his Sangat to advise his followers. He was a brave commander, thinker and poet. He was killed by 2 pashtuns on Aurangzeb’s orders on Oct. 7, 1708. Banda Bahadur Singh  went to Delhi to take revenge of  this cruelty.

1866 – Maulana Mazharul Haque (Mithapur, Patna). An educationist, freedom fighter and Arabic, Persian scholar. A University was established in his name later.                                                           1887 – Legendary mathematician Srinivasa Iyengar Ramanujan, who did notable work on hypergeometric series and continued fractions. With no formal education, Ramanujan made such remarkable discoveries in the field of higher mathematics that his name became immortal in this field. He learned mathematics by himself and compiled 3,884 theorems of mathematics during his lifetime. Most of these theorems have been proved correct.

1986 – Tanmay Mishra, A right-hand  aggressive middle-order batsman, he made his One Day International debut for Kenya in 2006 against Zimbabwe at Bulawayo. Mishra also played for  Deccan Chargers ahead of IPL 5, signed as an ‘Indian’ as he has an Indian passport.  In the 2014 IPL players auction, he was bought by the Royal Challengers Bangalore for Rs. 1 million.

RIP…. 1958 – Taraknath Das. Famous revolutionary and  colleague of Aurovindo Ghosh, Surendranath Banerjee and Chittaranjan Das. He  was co-founder of Ghaddar Party in  North America along with  Sardar Ajit Singh, Lala Hardayal, Ras Bihari Das, Baraktulla Khan and Vishnu Harish Pingley around 1912.

1975 – Vasant Desai,  legendary  evergreen music composer of Indian cinema. The famous song ‘Ae Malik Tere Bande Hum’ for the film ‘Do Aankhen Barah Haath’ was composed by Vasant Desai. This song is  still heard wholeheartedly by the devotees. This song was included in the morning prayer meeting in all the schools by the Punjab government  (video credit-Gold Movies).

You may have known…. India operates two active aircraft carriers (INS Vikramaditya & INS Vikrant) and China has three, with a fourth under construction.
