1930 – Scotch tape was developed by Richard G. Drew at 3M, St. Paul Minnesota, US. Once marketed, the public found the tape had a wide range popular applications in mending, sealing and joining.
1930 – 1st appearance of comic strip “Blondie”by the American cartoonist Chic Young.
1954 – SE Asia Treaty Org (SEATO) forms to stop communists in Asia.
1961 – Statistical evidence linking heavy smoking with heart disease was reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
1962 – Chinese army infiltrated in the north-east border of India exceeding the Mac-Mahon line (Tibet-India boundary). This was the first occasion of Chinese infiltration.
1965 – Pakistan commenced its drive into the Indian Punjab using its 1-armoured division with the aim to foreclose India’s options north of the Beas-Sutlej river line, after foiling the southern most divisional attack mounted by 4-Mountain Division. India beat Pakistan squarely in the war lasting less than 2 months.
1974 – President Gerald Ford pardons former President R Nixon of all federal crimes.
2012 – Pakistan and India plan to mutually ease visa requirements.
Born….1887 – Swami Sivananda, religious leader, Hindu universalist renaissance guru, author of 200 books and founder of Divine Life Society with 400 branches worldwide.
1935 – Asha Bhosle, famous playback singer. Second most versatile singer of varied genres classical, Folk, Pop, Ghazals, Bhajans, Gurbani and Rabindra Sangeet. She is the daughter of music teacher Deenanath Mangeshkar and sister of legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar, Usha Mangeshkar and Hridaynath Mageshkar. She has also acted and done songs for about 950 films and has been listed on Guinness Book of records. She won 2 National, 9 Filmfare incuding a Lifetime Achievement award, 18 Maharashtra Sangeet awads, she was honoured with Padma Vibhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke award in 2000.
RIP…. 1960 – Feroz Gandhi, husband of former PM Indira Gandhi and a prominent member of the Lok Sabha. He was father of Rajiv and Sanjay Gandhi, and grandfather of Priyanka Vasra and Rahul Gandhi.
1982 – Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, former Chief Minister of Kashmir, who dominated the political scene of Jammu and Kashmir for 50 years. He was the grandfather of present Chief Minister Omer Abdullah and father of ex-CM Farooq Abdullah. He was a close friend of first PM Nehru, so played important role in Kashmir politics. But was put behind bars several times for his pro-Pakistan actions and statements.
