1855 – Santhals of Rajmahal Hills, Santhal-Paragana, Bihar started their agitation
against ill treatment by Britishers, revenue officers, police, landlords and moneylenders under the leadership on Sindhu and Kanhu at Bhoranadhighi, Bengali.
1857 – The Battle of Chinhat was fought between British forces and Indian rebels at Ismaiganj, ne
ar Chinhat, near Awadh or Oudh.
1859 – Charles Blondin is 1st to cross Niagara Falls on a tightrope.
1908 – At around 7:15 am, northwest of Lake Baikal, Tungsuka, Russia, a huge fireball (mateorite), nearly as bright as the Sun was seen crossing the sky. Minutes later, there was a huge flash and a shock wave felt up to 650 km away. Travelling at over 25 km per second (60,000 mph) penetrated Earth’s atmosphere, heated to about 10,000 ºC and detonated 6 to10 km above the ground. The blast released the energy of 10-50 Megatons of TNT, destroying 2,200 sq km of forest leaving no trace of life.
1914 – Mahatma Gandhi’s 1st arrest after campaigning for Indian rights in Pretoria, South Africa. He lanced peaceful protrst-Satyagraha there. 
1947 – The members of the Boundary Commission for the partition of Bengal and Punjab were announced after the declaration of partition of India.
1948 – The transistor was demonstrated by its inventors. This made possible the small portable, battery-powered transistor radios which were sold to the public by late 1954.
1965 – Cease-fire was agreed under UN auspices between India and Pakistan, who signed treaty to stop the war at R
ann of Kutch.
1972 – One second was added to the world’s time in order to keep the super-accurate atomic clocks in step with the Earth’s rotation. Since the adoption of this system in 1972, it has been necessary to add 26 seconds to Coordinated Universal Time (UT
C). It lead to adfoption of first Leap extra day in February.,
1986 – Mizoram became 23rd State of India with Aizwal as the Capital city. Mizoram shares over 722 km of International Border with Bangladesh to the West and Myanmar to the South. It has over 83% Christian population apart from Buddhist, Hindus and others.
1995 – CNN launches a 24-hour news channel in partnership with Doo rdarshan.
1999 – India reiterates that any talks will resume only after Pakistan’s unconditional withdrawal from Kargil. Meanwhile Indian Army continues to attack the Tiger Hill area and captures two positions in close proximity to Ju
bar features.
2000 – The Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council adopts a resolution seeking separation from J&K.
Born…. 1928 – Kalyanji (Virji Shah), legendary Indian music director and elder of the most popular musician duo Kalyanji-Anandji. Virji Shah composed hundreds evergreen film tunes like Nagin (1954), Samrat Chandragupt, Bairag, Saraswatichandra, Purab Aur Paschim, Upkaar, Kora Kagaz, Don, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Safar, Lawaris, Tridev etc. They won a National Film Award for film Saraswatichandra, a Filmfare, a Grammy award for an Asha Bhonsle song and several other music honours inclding a Padma Shri award in 1992.
1973 – Dodda Ganesh. Former Indian right arm pacer. Very successful in domestic Karanataka cricket, he could not establish well in Tests, played just 4 Tests an
d One ODI. In Ranji Trophy he took 365 wickets in about 10 years career with 7 for 36 being his best (and 12 for 89) in a match against Haryana in 2002-03.
RIP…. 1857 – Maharaja Gulab Singh, the founder of the Dogra dynasty and the first Maharaja of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, the second-largest princely state under the British Raj, which was created after the defeat of the Sikh Empire in the First Anglo-Sikh War.
1917 – Dr. Dadabhai Naoroji, great Indian, patriot and one of the founders of the Indian National Congress, politician and merchant. Called the Grand Old Man of India, he was a critic of Briti
sh rule in India and also was the first to represent India in British Parliament
2007 – Sahib Singh Verma, politician and former Chief Minister of Delhi between 1996-98. Was also a Lok Sabha member and Union Cabinet Minister for Labour. Sahib Singh’s son Parvesh Varma is the current minister in Delhi cabinet.
