1628 – Shah Jahan ascends the Mughal throne in Agra.

1819 – Modern Singapore was founded, establishing a British trading post on the island.

1911 – The first, or one of the earliest, formal old age homes in India was the Raja Varma Old Age Home, established in Thrissur, Kerala, by the Raja of Cochin. (While earlier charitable, voluntary organizations for the elderly appeared, such as The Friend in Need Society of Madras in 1840, Little Sisters of the Poor in Calcutta (1882) provided early organized care in India, the 1911 facility is widely recognized as a pioneering, dedicated institution of this kind).

1918 – Britain grants women (30 and over) permission  to  vote.

1944 – American obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr. John Rock with Miriam F. Menkin fertilised the first human egg in a test tube  (pic credit-marshronner.rutgers.edu .

1954 – Kashmir Assembly  passes bill for  re-unification of the State  of Jammu & Kashmir with  Democratic  Republic of India.

1971 – Alan Shepard was the oldest person to walk on the  Moon’s surface . He  took a few shots at some golf balls while on the moon. He attached a 6-iron golf club to the end of a sample collecting tool. Despite thick gloves and a stiff suit that forced him to swing the club with one hand only, he hit two golf balls. The first landed in a nearby crater. The second was hit squarely, and in the one-sixth gravity of the moon, Shepard said it travelled “miles and miles and miles.” The golf club is on display at the U.S. Golf Association headquarters. 1999 – India’s first pacemaker bank was established in Kolkata.                         2019 – Honeybees are able to add and subtract and understand concept of zero according to research from RMIT University in Australia.

Born…. 1890 – Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan (Frontier Gandhi), a great statesman, who participated in India’s freedom struggle and was known as “Simant Gandhi” for his work and devotion.a prominent independence activist.His admirers called him ‘Badshah Khan’ (pic credit-madrascourier.com).

1911- Ronald Reagon. An actor and 40th Amrican President during  1981-89. He is known for liberal economic policies, global war on drugs and  signing of INF Treaty with Soviet President Mikhael Gobachev in 1987.

1915 – Kavi Pradeep, a poet and songwriter, originally named ‘Ramchandra Narayanji Dwivedi’, who is best known for his patriotic song “Aye Mere Watan Ke Logo” written as a tribute to the soldiers who had died defending the country during the Sino-Indian War.                                                                                                                                                                        1940 – Bhupinder. Legendary Ghazal, Bhajan and film singer.  Known for singing  songs, for Gulzar’s Aandhi,  Mausam, Naam, Samunder, Satte Pe Sattas, Jhuk Gaya Assman, Badal, Satya, Haqeeqat, Aakhri Khat,  etc. He sang  some songs with  Manna Dey,  Talat Mehmud, Kishore Kumar, RD Burman and won may accolades.                                                                                                                                                  1983 – Shanthakumaran Nair (Sreesanth), cricketer.  Indian  right arm swinger, fiery pacer  and  occasional actor. His best bowling  5/40  in Newland, South Africa  in 2011 was a memorable feet by him. He played for Rajasthan Royals in IPL format but  retired from active cricket in 2022 following  spot-fixing charges (not proved). Sreesanth also appeared  in several TV showns and films.

1992 – Nora Fatehi. Indian model and flameboyant Bollywood actor. Also acted in Telugu, Malayalam films like Oopiri, Stree and  Batla House, Roar, Rocky Handsome etc.

2002-Sophie Silva. Pop Singer,  blogger, Tik-Tok personality.

RIP….  1804 – Joseph Priestley, English chemist, clergyman and liberal  political theorist who discovered the element Oxygen (pic credit-Pixels.com).

1931 – Motilal Gangadhar Nehru, a barrister,  politician, co-founder of ‘Swaraj Party’,  He was father of  our first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. His family came from Srinagar to Jaipur, then to Delhi. He practiced law  and  shifted his residence from Delhi/Kanpur  to  Allahabad  and  adopted surname  Nehru.

2022- Lata Mangeshkar. Legendary   and iconic singer who ruled Bollywood music singing  scene for over 60 years. She’s the daughter of music teacher Deenath Mangeshkar and eldest sister of Asha Bhansle and Usha Mangeshkar. She was called Swar Kokila and won several awards including  Padam Viubhushan, 8 Filmfare,  3 National Film Awards, Maharashtra Bhushan, Lifetime Achievement and Dadasaheb Phalke award in 2001. She was also nominated to Rajya Sabha in 1999.  Her net worth is believed to Rs. 368 Crores. 

You may have known…. The Gujarat state has accounted for the highest number of Harappan sites after independence. Major, significant sites uncovered in Gujarat include the port city of Lothal in the Bhal region, Dholavira in Kutch, and Surkotada, which have profoundly deepened understanding of the Indus Valley Civilization (pic credit-themonktravel.com).
