1586 – Sir Walter Raleigh brought the first tobacco to England from Virginia.

1866 – Cyrus W. Field finally succeeded, after two failures, in laying the first underwater telegraph cable 1,686 miles long across the Atlantic Ocean between North America and Europe.

1888 – The first U.S. electric automobile, designed by Philip W. Pratt, was demonstrated in Boston, a tricycle powered by six Electrical Accumulator Company cells, weighing 90 pounds.
1920 – Radio compass used for 1st time for aircraft navigation.

1921 – Insulin was isolated by Sir Frederick Banting and Charles Best. It proved an effective treatment for diabetes.

1949 – The British De Havilland Comet, the world’s first jet-propelled airliner, made its maiden flight in England.

1949 – Agreement reached on the ceasefire line in Kashmir.

1953 – End of the Korean war, with the signing of the armistice.

1994 – Parliament votes to ban tests for determining the sex of an unborn child, as these tests have resulted in thousands of aborted female fetuses.

Born….  1967 – Rahul Bose, rugby player  turned actor, director and producer. Known for films like Everybody Says  I Am Fine,  Split Wide Open, Poorna, Courage Has  No Limit, Dil Dhadkane Do, Mr. & Mrs. Iyer, Kalpurush  etc.

RIP…. 1972 – Charu Majumdar, father of Naxalite Movement and the founder President of C.O.I.(M-L), died in prison.

1992 – Amjad Khan, famous film actor. Son of veteran actor Jayant (Zakaria Khan),  Amjad is  known for his role as  Gabbar Singh,  a  dreadful   decoit in the  film  Sholay released on August 15, 1975  by  Ramesh Sippy.  The film was a blockbuster due to its various strong factors like star cast with  Sanjeev Kumar (as Thakur),  Dharmendra-Amitabh  (Jai-Veeru), Hema Malini (Vasanti),  Jaya Bhaduri (Radha) and Asrani (Hitler-jailer). The story was a  romance,  comedy, drama and  chasing a decoit in the wild. Amjad also acted in  Des Pardes, Shatraj Ke Khiladi, Naastik, Satte Pe satta, Chambal Ki Kasam,  Ganga Ki Kasam, Ham Kisi Se Kam Nahin, Naseeb etc. He also /directed produced some films.

You may have known…. As per 2011 Census, among the Indian States, Bihar has the highest population density with 1106 per sq km and Arunachal Pradesh with 17 per sq km is the lowest.
