1606 – 5th Sikh  Guru, Arjan Dev was executed in Lahore (Pakistan) by torture on June 18, 1606 on the orders of mughal emperor Jehangir, when he refused to convert to Islam. Guru Ajan Dev  compiled the verses of Guru Nanak Dev ji and other Gurus, Sanits into an Aadi Grandh (now called Granth Saheb),  worshipped as the live incarnation of Gurus after 10th Guru  announced to his followers.

1657 – The first pendulum clock was patented by its inventor, Christiaan Huygens.

1903 – Pepsi-Cola Co. forms. (To increase business at his store’s soda fountain, pharmacist Caleb D. Bradham created a soft drink. In the summer of 1898, he mixed carbonated water, sugar, vanilla, oils, pepsin, and kola nut extract. Customers at in his pharmacy in New Bern, N.C., liked the beverage and called it Brad’s Drink. As its popularity grew, Bradham changed the name to Pepsi-Cola).

1911 – The IBM company was founded in New York in 1911. Earlier its name was Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company.

1922 – Henry A. Berliner demonstrated the first helicopter prototype for representatives of the U.S. Bureau of Aeronautics.

1963 – Lieutenant Valentina Tereshkova, a 26-year-old Russian, was the first woman in the world to fly into Space (pic credit-pinterest.com).

1983 – Guru Ghasidas University of Chhattisgarh was established. Guru Ghasidas was the Guru of the Satnam Dharma, a Satnami Saint and a great Scholar from Chhattisgarh in the early 19th century. It was Guru Ghasidas who started preaching in a deep forested part of Chhattisgar

1989 – 4 hole-in-ones made, all on 6th hole, in the US Open.

1990 – Mumbai’s monsoon rains are known to be intense, with July 26, 2005, marking the city’s highest-ever 24-hour rainfall at 942 mm.

1993 – Harshad Mehta, the  scamster  who duped  securities of Stock Maket  (SEBI),  to the of Rs. 30,000 crores, accuses PM  Rao  of taking Rs. 1 crore payoff from him in November 1991. He was termed as a Big Bull  in the financial circles. PM Narasimha Rao terms it malicious and unfounded.

2010 – Bhutan enacted a Tobacco Control Act, establishing the world’s first country-wide tobacco ban.

2019 – India imposes retaliatory tariffs on 28 US goods.

2019 – Sara Netanyahu, wife of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu admits to misuse of state funds in court.

Born…. 1920 – Hemant Kumar (Mukhopadhyay), famous  Indian music director and a playback singer who primarily sang in Bengali and Hindi, along with several other Indian languages, including Marathi, Gujarati, Odia, Assamese, Tamil, Punjabi, Bhojpuri, Konkani, Sanskrit and Urdu. Called the Voice of God for his melodius Bhajan singing,  Hemant won 2 Film National awards,  Filmfares and Sangeet Natak Akademy awrd and several BFJA honours.

1950 – Mithun Chakravorty, a Bollywood actor, singer, producer, writer, social worker, entrepreneur, a television presenter who works predominantly in Hindi and Bengali films. He is a former Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament and thye big factor in BJPs victory in West Bengal.

1605 – Akbar (Abul-Fath Djalal-ud-Din), Mughal emperor of India (1556-1605), passed away of diarrhoea or dysentery at the age of 63 years. At Akbar’s graveside, stood conspicious in his simplicity, Jesuit priest Father Xavier who always remained his devoted friend. (Date could be 16 or 17).

1925 – Deshbandhu  Chittaranjan Das, founder of ‘Swarajya Party’, and a great freedom fighter, whose life was historic in the ‘Indian independence movement’. He was fondly called ‘Deshbandhu’ (Friend of the Country). He was a great nationalist and famous jurist.

1997 – P. Sukumaran, Malayalam film actor.

Tidbits….1882 – 17″ hailstones weighing 1.75 lbs fall in Dubuque Iowa, USA.

1943 – Actor/comedian Charlie Chaplin (54) marries actress Oona O’Neill (18).
