1784 – Britain & Tippu Sultan of Mysore sign peace treaty.
1851 – The Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations opened in Hyde Park, London. This was the first international exhibition to be held in any country.
1860 – A patent for the shaving mug was granted to Thomas E. Hughes. (Earlier, shaving mugs were a part of many men’s grooming routine. Though they may not be as common as they once were, shaving mugs are still a useful way to whip up a batch of creamy shaving lotion that will leave your face soft and smooth).
1884 – Construction began in Chicago, Illinois, on the first skyscraper, the ten-story steel-skeleton Home Insurance Company of New York (The use of a steel skeleton made the building of skyscrapers possible, for the frame carries the entire weight of the building, instead of the walls themselves supporting the entire weight).

1879 – Swami Vivekanand established Ramkrishna Mission, is a spiritual and philanthropic organisation set up in Belur Math, West Bengal. The mission is named after the Indian Hindu spiritual guru and mystic preacher Ramakrishna Paramhans. The mission was founded by Ramakrishna’s chief disciple Swami Vivekananda on 1 May 1897. The organisation mainly propagates the Hindu philosophy of Vedan
1899 – Bayer introduced Aspirin in powder form, in Germany.
1926 – Jim Corbett killed the notorious man-eating leopard of Rudraprayag at Gulabrai
village, who had attacked and killed about 125 people.
1948 – Baroda State merged into Bombay Province.
1960 – 1st of 2 cyclones in less than a month kills 35,000 in the Bay of Bengal with winds at a speed of 150 km/hour causing wreckage in East Pakistan and West Bengal.
1960 – Old Bombay province was divided between Maharashtra and Gujrat States.
1964 – Pt. Ravishankar University was established at Raipur in Madhya Pradesh.
1966 – Marathi becomes the official language of Maharashtra.
1972 – All fuel coal mines were nationalised by the Govt. of Indira Gandhi.
1977 – Janata Party was established prompted by mass leader Jaiprakash Narayan (JP) and comprising of Old Congressmen, Jan Sangh, Akali Dal, Communist Party, Swatantra Party, Bhartiya Lok Dal etc.
1994 – Political party Shiromani Akali Dal was established led by Prakash Singh Badal, GS Tohra, Talwandi, Surjeet Singh Barnala etyc. Though the Akali Dal was formed in June 1920 as a task force of Shiromani Gurudwara Pr
abandhak Committee (SGPC), but faught elections in Punjab in 1946 onwards. In the 1960s it was led by Master Tara Singh Sant Fateh Singh etc. for a separate Punabi Suba and got it in 1966-67 forming an Akali Dal govt. with support from Jan Sangh. Congress was now an Opposition Party.
1995 – SAARC endorses South Asia Free Trade Area (SAFTA) and establishes a South Asian Development Fund (SADF) for the economic and technical development of the subcontinent.
1998 – India resumes underground nuclear tests after more than a 20-year gap on Buddh Poornima (though it was May 11). It was a bold decesion by the BJP led by Atal Behari Vajpayee as PM, causing strict eceonomic and trade sanctions by America, Canada and many other Western nations. (There were three underground tests in Pokhran, including a thermonuclear device).
2012 – Japan’s car sales soar significantly after the previous year’s earthquake and tsunami, coming in at a
92% rise year-over-year.
2015 – Elon Musk, head of Tesla Motors, announces the formation of Tesla Energy, a producer of large batteries for storage of generated renewable energy in homes and businesses.
2019 – Evidence revealed that early humans from ancient Denisovan species lived at high altitudes in Tibet 160,000 years ago.
2020 – Tweets by Elon Musk saying Tesla’s share price is too high, wipes out $14 billion off the carmaker’s value.
2023 – Geoffrey Hinton ‘the Godfather of AI” resigns from Google to speak out about the dangers of AI – eliminating jobs and creating a world where many may “not be able to know what is true anymore”.
Born…. 1913 – Balraj Sahani, famous film actor.. Known for roles in Do Bigha Zamin, Kabuliwala, Waqt, Upkaar, Seema, Ek Phool Do Mali, Chhoti Behn, Garam Hawa, Dharti Ke Lal etc. His elder brother Bhisham Sahni was a popular writer and son Parikshit also an actor. he was a
lso member of Communist Party of India. Was awarded Padam Shri in 1969.
1919 – Manna Dey, legendary classical and Cine singer. Composed and sang unorgettable songs like Tu Pyar Ka Sagar Hai, Kasme Vaade…, Tujhe Sooraj Kahun Ya Chanda .. for films like Waqt, Seema, Padosan, Upkar, Vasant Bahar etc. Got 6 National and Filmfare awards, Also Padam Bhushan and Dada Saheb Phalke award in 2007 (pic credit-gaana.com).
1922 – Madhu Limaye, great politician, freedom fighter, writer and national leader. A socialist essayist and a
ctivist, particularly active in the 1970s. A follower of Ram Manohar Lohia and a fellow-traveller of George Fernandes, he was active in the Janata government following the Emergency.

1927 – Namavar Singh was an Indian literary critic, linguist, academician and theoretician. Born in Varanasi, he graduated from Banaras Hindu University, where he also taught for some time followed by JNU, He was also editor of Janayug and Alochana magazines. He wrote about a dozen books and was awaded Sahitya Akedmi honour and several other literary awards.
1973 – Diana Hayden, popular Indian model and cine actress, television host and the winner of
Miss World 1997 pageant. She is the third Indian woman to win the Miss World title.

1988 – Anushka Sharma, born in Ayodhya, popular Bollywood actor and wife of cricketer Virat Kohli. Acted in films like Rab Ne Bana Di, NH 10, Dil Dhadkane Do, Zero, Mantru ki Bijlee, Sultan, Pari, Jab Harry Met Sejal, Ae Dil Mushkil, Patiala House etc. Won several Filmfare, Times of India Film awards, IIFA etc.
