1860 – First group of Indian worker’s reached Natal, South Africa.

1958 – India and U.S.S.R. sign trade agreement to exchange Soviet industrial and agricultural equipment for farm commodities.

1966 – The Press Council of India was established.

1983 – Kapil Dev takes 9-83 vs. WI at Ahmedabad in 1983, but India still lose the Test.                     Another best bowling by Indian Spinner Bishen Singh Bedi  was – 5/27 vs New Zealand, 1976,  at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

1988 – India gives full recognition to the state of Palestine. Yet PLO always supports Pakistan on Kashmir issue in major  world fora.
1993 – Kashmir’s 32-day-old Hazaratbal impasse ends with militants’ surrender.

1995 – Basdeo Panday, an Indian-origin politician, became the 5th Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago. He was an actor, author, lawyer, trade unionist and a statesman. He was the country’s PM from 1995-2001.

2013 – Cricketer Sachin Tendulkar scores 74 runs in the final Test innings of his career at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.

2015 – Largest diamond discovered in more than a century, a 1,111 carat stone found in the Karowe mine, Botswana.

2018 – CIA concludes Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman ordered the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Born…. 1827 – Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi. She was named Manikarnika  Tambe and was called ‘Manu’. (correct date could be 16th or 19th Nov. 1830). She was one of the prominent and fierce  fighters in the Revolt for Freedom from the British govt.  She was  born in a Maratha family in Varanasi and married to  the Raja  Gangadhar Rao  of Jhansi . Their son died young, so when  Raja Gandhar Rao  was seriously  ill, he  adopted a relative’s sibling  Damodar Rao  as  successor to the throne. East India Comapny did not accept the child as heir and  attempted to  annexe  Jhansi into their Empire (Doctrine of Lapse – rule). Rani’s army faught them  and killed most of the British army.  She joined the other  leaders of 1858 Movement for Frreedom but  British  forces under Maj. Gen. Huge Rose  chased her out and killed her in Kalpi, near Gwalior  on  June 18, 1858. Her bravery made her immortal in Indian history of  Freedom  and many writers, poets wrote  poems/folk lore in her praise. Kavi Vrindalal Verma wrote a biography novel on her life in 1946  -Jhansi Ki Rani Lakshmibai  and most popular song:                                                                                                                                                                                                            बुंदेले हरबोलों के मुँह हमने सुनी कहानी थी,

1917 –  Chitragupt  (Srivastava),  classical film music composer of 1950s-60s He composed for popular  films   Bhabhi, Barkha, Mein Chup Rahoongi,  Oonche Log etc. . He also did music for Punjabi, Gujarati and Bhjpuri films. His sons Anand-Milind ae also well-known musicians.(video  credit-HD Song Bollywood)

1927 – Dr. Shreeram Lagoo, a Marathi theatre personality and  popular  Bollywood actor who left medical practice and took over his passion for acting. He acted in over 350 films like Pinjra, Saamna, Kathputli, Bhingra, Gupchup, Nagrit, Shasan in Marathi and Ponga Pandit, Raeeszada, Chalte Chalte, Des Pardesh, Phool Khile Hain Gulshan Gulshan, College Girl, Kashish, Insaaf Ka Tarazu, Prof. PyaareLal, Sautan, Sadma, Gharaunda etc. He was nominted to  2 Filmfare award and won for Gharaunda, Sahitya Akademi. Kalidas Samman and Padam Shri.

1963 – Meenakshi Seshadri, popular Bollywood  herine who acted in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil films like  Painter Babu, Hero,  Ghayal, Ghatak, Shehnshah, Ghar Ho to Aisa, Duet, Meri Jung, Karan Arjun, Jurm, Damini  etc.  She won Filmfares 3 times and Lux Awards.

1973 – Pullela Gopichand, Badminton player, 2nd to win All England Badminton in 2001  after Prakash Padukone and won other awards. He now has a  coaching academy and  ace woman Badminton player PV Sindhu has been his prominent  student.

1985 – Aditya Roy Kapur, model, VJ  and actor. Known for roles in Aashiqui,  London Dreams,  Malang, OK Jaanu, Fitoor, Gumrah, Metro In Dino etc. He won a Filmfare in supporting role (pic credit- filmibeat.com).

RIP….. 1877 – Ardaseer Cursetjee Wadia,  a Parsi  professor, pioneer and innovator.  Founded his Shipbuilding industry in Bombay. He was appointed Fellow of Royal Society of Britain.
