1804 – The first self-propelling steam engine or steam locomotive was tested at the Pen-y-Darren ironworks on its normally horse-drawn tramline. It was able to pull a load of 15 tons at a speed of about 5 mph. However, the cast-iron rails of the tramways of those days were not strong enough to support the weight of his new machine and the experiment was soon abandoned (pic credit-wirinfixhovers..net).

1811 – Sir  Humphry Davy introduced the name “chlorine” from the Greek word for “green,” for the bright yellow green gas chemists then known  as oxymuriatic gas.

1858 – The first electrical burglar alarm installation in the U.S.

1878 – The first U.S. telephone directory, listing about 50 names, was issued.

1902 – Dr. Harvey Williams Cushing, the first US brain surgeon, performed his first brain operation. A neuro surgeon, pathologist,  draftsman who belonged to a Physicians family, his great grandfather was the  pioneer in health and medicine.  He was also  writer and  won Pulitzer Prize for a biography Life of Sir William Osler in 1925.

1947 – The Polaroid camera, was first demonstrated.

1959 – The Press Club of India was established in New Delhi. It is crucial for upholding media freedom, democracy, and providing a platform for professional interaction. It defends journalists’ rights against censorship, offers legal support, and serves as a vital venue for public debate, press conferences, and networking.

1983 – More than 600 people were killed in Assam after student agitators protesting the immigration of Muslim refugees from Bangladesh attempted to stop state elections.

1999 – Former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif signed the Lahore Declaration. It was a landmark peace treaty aimed at avoiding nuclear conflict and improving relations between the two nations.

2004 – Sania Mirza created history by becoming the first Indian woman to win a WTA title, winning the AP Tourism Hyderabad Open.

2013 – A series of terrorist bombings occurred in the Dilsukhnagar area of Hyderabad, resulting in 17 deaths and over 100 injuries.

2018 – Film star Kamal Haasan launches a new political party – Makkal Needhi Mayyam in Tamil Nadu state.

2021 – BJP issues resolution country had “defeated COVID under the able, sensitive, committed and visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi”. Massive second wave hits two months later.

Born ….. 1938 – Hari Krishna Shastri. Eldest son of late Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. He was elected to Lok Sabha in 1967 (Allahabad), in 1980 and 1984 (Fatehpur)  and was a Union Minister in Rajiv Gandhi govt.

1942 – Jayshree Gadkar. Popular Marathi actress who played Kaushalya’s  role in Ramanand Sagar’s  TV epic Ramayan.  She also acted in Sampoorna Ramayan, Luv Kush serials and some Marathi films (pic credit-alchetron.com).

1961 – Abhijit Vinayak  Banerjee. Indo-American economist  working with Ford Foundation. He won the Nobel Prize for Economy in 2019. He has written several boopks and paoers on micro-economics, economic research, political economy etc. His most popular  book is Good Economics for Hard Times (pic credit-roundglassliving.com). 

1964 –  Vishnu Deo Sai.  Chattisgarh politician, a four time BJP  Lok Sabha member and now the Chief Minister of the state since 2023.

1976 -Priya Sachdev Kapoor.  Indo-British business woman, model, TV actress. She married Sanjay Kapur, ex-husband of  popular actress Karishma Kapoor after her divorce.

RIP….  1829Rani Chennamma, the queen of Kittur and a legendary freedom fighter who led an armed rebellion against the British East India Company in 1824 (pic credit-hindupad.             1991 – Nutan,  popular Bollywood film actress, daughter of  legendary actor, director, producer of  early movies of 1930s to 1950s  Shobhana Samath. Nutan started her cine  journey from  Hamari Beti in 1950 and continued with Bandini, Sujata, Seema,  Milan,  Anari, Chhalia, Khandaan, Saraswati Chandra, Saudagar,  Paying Guest, Main Tulsi Tere Angan Ki, Kranti etc. over 70 films.  She won Miss Mussoorie in 1952, 4 Filmfare and a Padam Shri awards. Her sister Tanuja and son Mohnish Bahl are also popular film, TV actors.

You may have known…. India has 106–107 National Parks and over 560–573 Wildlife Sanctuaries. These protected areas cover approximately 5.32% of the country’s total geographical area.                                                                                                                                                            Kanha National Park & Tiger Reserve is one the biggest and most popular tiger  hibaitats in India,  mostly visited for Safari by  global  tourists (pic credit-yahoo.com).
