1814 – The Times in London became the first newspaper to be printed by steam power.

1948 – Constituent Assembly bans discrimination against  Untouchables.

1949 – The Nizam of Hyderabad sought to remain independent after the partition of the Indian subcontinent.

1970 – Haryana achieves their target of supplying electricity to 100% villages (Hayana Day tableau at Republic Day Parade).

1989 – Voters oust Rajiv Gandhi and Congress party.

Born…. 1803 – Christian A Doppler, Austrian physicist,  known for Doppler effect in waves.                                                                          1962 – Sadanand Viswanath  is a former Indian cricketer who played in 3 Tests and 22 ODIs, from 1985 to 1988. Currently, he is a first class umpire and team coach. He was a part of the Indian squad which won the 1985 World Championship of Cricket.

1982 – Ramya (Divya Spandana) is a Bengaluru born actress, producer and politician.  she has acted in Kannada, Telugu and Tamil films like Abhi (2003), Amritdhare, Tananam Tananam, Sanju Weds Geetha etc. and won 17 film awards including Filmfare South, Udaya, Swarna Awards,etc.  She  joined Indian National Congress (INC) in 2011 and faught bye-election in 2013, was elected as  Member of  Lok Sabha, representing the Mandya constituency in Karnataka from 2013-14. 1984 – Neha Pendse. Bollywood model, TV serial  and cine actor. She acted in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi and Malyalam films like Golmal (2003), Nothing But Life, Abraham Lincoln, Swami, June, Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari  etc. She has won ITA,  Pune International  Film Festival and a Filmfare award.

1995 – Liv Hewson. Australian actor, known for roles in SantaClara Diet series, Yellow Jackets, Undereb My Skin, Let it Snow etc. for fairy tale stories. She refused to submit entry for Emmy awards for difference in perception. She got Human Rights Campaign for Visbility Award.

RIP….  1953 – Bahuriya Ramswarup Devi, better known as Laxmibai of Bihar. Born in Saran (Chhapra) area of Bihar,  she was called Rani Laxmibai of Bihar when she killed 7 English soldiers  during  August Kranti movement and threw them in Narayani River. She was also awarded Raman Magasasay award and electyed to Bihar Assembly before death in 1953.  Her actions, including taking part in demonstrations and rallying are remembered as crucial in shaking the foundations of British rule in the region.

1975 – Graham Hill.  popular Motorsport personality who won 2 Formula One races,  won rowing competitions and  owned motor-racing team Embassy Hill. He died in an Air Crash near Arkley, London alongwith his 5 team members.

1993 – JRD Tata, a pioneer of Indian aviation.JRD Tata. Indian industrialist, philonthropist, expert pilot who got flyimg license  and launched Tata Airlines on Oct. 15, 1932,  which was later converted to Air India by Govt. of India and taken over. The airlines has now been privatised and handed back to Tata group. He was the predecessor of Rattan Tata,  his nephew Rattan Tata,  as Chairman Tata Group,  who  died last year.
