1797 – The first successful parachute jump was made by André-Jacques Garnerin, released from a balloon 2,230-ft above the Parc Monceau, Paris.
1879 – Edison’s long series of experiments testing materials for suitability as an electric light filament reached a turning point. Charles Batchelor, working at Edison’s Menlo Park laboratory, produced illumination for 14½ hours from a lamp using a carbonized cotton thread. It failed when extra power was added. However, this was a substantial improvement, attention turned to improving the carbonized filament.
1897 – World’s 1st car dealer opens in London.
1938 – Xerography was demonstrated by Chester F. Carlson. Xeroxis a term coming from “xerography” which means dry writing and is a trademark.
1963 – Bakhra-Nangal Dam, a multipurpose river valley project, was dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. (Nehru visited the project 10 times during its construction. Fired by passion and enthusiasm to build new India, all engineers and technicians put in un-tiring efforts day & night for almost a decade to build Bhakra Dam – The Nation’s Pride).
1964 – French philosopher/author Jean-Paul Sartre refuses Nobel prize.
1981 – Aspartame artificial sweetener was approved for tabletop use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
1983 – The Indian Union government reduces the upper age limit for the Civil Services Examination from 28 years to 26 years.
2008 – India launches its first unmanned lunar mission Chandrayaan-1. (The vehicle was successfully inserted into lunar orbit on 8 November 2008).
2010 – WikiLeaks, a website founded by Julian Assange that functioned as a clearinghouse for classified or otherwise privileged information, released thousands of U.S. documents relating to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
2018- Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison makes a public apology to victims of child sexual abuse in institutions.

1896 – Charles Glen King, American biochemist who discovered Vitamin C.
