1768 – Nizam accepted British supremacy and Col.  Smith  signed peace treaty with the Nizam.

1792 – The 3rd Mysore War ended in Tipu Sultan’s signing of Peace Treaty dictated by Lord Cornwallis & surrendering his two sons, Abdul Khaliq & Maiz – Uddin. This is known as Treaty of Seringapatam (also called Srirangapatnam, Mysore’s capital).

1886 – London Times publishes world’s 1st classified ad.

1893 – Rudolf Diesel received a German patent for the diesel engine. His engine uses high compressed pressure of the gases in the cylinder rather than a spark to ignite the fuel.

1946 – Some 300,000 Indians joined in anti-British demonstrations in the wake of previous day’s violent riots in the city of Bombay. A day of terror and rebellion saw Indian Navy members turn against their British officers firing machine guns.

1980 – Prakash Padukone becomes the first Indian to win All-England  Open Badminton Championship. The same year he became World No. 1  shuttler (pic credit-bloggertemplates.in)

1997 – The successful cloning of an adult mammal was announced: a female lamb named “Dolly” that was born 5 Jul 1996. Dolly lived until 14 Feb 2003, when she was put down due to the effects of a progressive lung disease.

1998 – Osama bin Laden publishes a fatwa declaring jihad against all Jews and Crusaders (pic credit-foreignpolicy.com).

2020 – Violent protests against new citizenship laws erupt in Delhi, Ieaving at least 38 people   dead over the next few days (pic credit-PTI).

 

Born: 1913 – P.C. Sorcar. Famous Indian Jadoogar,  called the Maharaja of Magic,  who mesmerized his audience through  imaginary visuals and  verses  with his clever  ‘haath ki Safai’ or Inderjaal. . He travelled world over to show his magic. He was awarded Samurai Crown in Japan, Golden  Dragon in China,  The Golden Laurel and Medallion in Germany and made  Honorary Member of International  Magic Association in New Zealand and  awarded Padam Shri by Govt of Inndia in1964.

1982 – Karan Singh Grover. Indian model, TV actor and Bollywood films. He married thrice including popular romance queen Bipasa Basu. (pic credit-biographywiki)

1983 – Emily Olivia Laura  Blunt a popular Brityish actress. Known for roles in The Devil Wears Prada, The Young Victoria, Gnomio & Juliet, Edge of Tomorrow.   She has won a Golden Globe, 2 Screen  Actors Guild, 4 British and 1 American Academy award.

RIP….  1969 – Madhubala,  most popular romantic and bold  actress of   Hindi and Bengali films . She started  as a child actor in Basant (1942) and as heroine in Neel Kamal, and   Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi with Kishore Kumar. Her most popular films were  Amar, Howrah Brdge, Mahal, Half Ticket, Kala Paani, Anarkali, Daulat, Mr. & Mrs. 55, Sangdil, Badal, Mahal, Mughle-Azam etc. She was awarded Filmfare and a National Award. Madhubala died at an early age of 36.

1998 – Raman Lamba, former Delhi cricketer and Indian Test batsman. He scored a hundred and 2 fiflies in a One Day searies asgainst Australia  (1986-87). He passed away in Dhaka, three days after being hit on the head while close-in fielding.

2004 – Vijay Anand, also called Goldy Anand was a  very successful  film director, producer. Youngest brother of  Chetan and Dev Anand he  wrote scripts for  Tere Ghar Ke Saamne and directed blockbusters like Guide, Teesri Manzil, Jewel Thief, Johanny Mera Naam, Kora Kagaz etc. He won 2 Filmfare and a National Award (pic credit-AmarUjala.com).

Partition of the country in 1947 threw everything out of gear and dealt a severe blow to industry in India. While Pakistan accounted for only 23 per cent of the area and 18 per cent of the population of pre-partition India, that country got 40 per cent of the cotton and 81 per cent of the jute output. Overall, India retained 91% of the industrial establishments as against 9% that went to Pakistan.
