1948 – The besieged garrison of Punch was relieved a full year after its siege. Thus a firm grip had been established all the way from Pathankot on the major portions of this province.

1964 – Dr. Michael E. DeBakey of Houston performed the first successful coronary artery bypass graft procedure (pic credit-The Lancet).

1971 – China People’s Republic seated in United Nations Security Council.

1983 – The first Commonwealth Heads of  Government  Meeting (CHOGM) in India was held in Delhi (pic credit-itsgpa.com).

1994 – 100 killed in a stampede of Govari Samaj people during a protest march towards Nagpur Assembly.

2014 – In a potential attempt to claim sovereignty, China is building an island in the South China Sea in an area claimed by several nations; sources speculate that the island may be used to support an airstrip and military activities.

Born….1897 – Nirad C. Chaudhuri, Kishoreganj (now in Bangladesh) Indian  scholar, novelist,  writer. He wrote many  successful books like The Autography of An Unknown Indian, A Passage to England, The Continent of Circe, Thy Hand,  Great  Anarch, Culture in the Vanity Bag, Hinduism a Religion to Live By , The East is the East, The west is the West etc. He was awarded Sahitya  Akademi  Award in India, and  CBE by the British govt (pic credit-sujeeytpublications.in).

1900 – Durga Das, famous social reformer and journalist. Correspondent for The Associated Press for long.  Editor of Times of India and The Hindustan Times,  established his news agency INFA and was co-founder of Press Club of India.

1926 – Sathya Sai Baba, Hindu universalist renaissance charismatic guru, educationalist and worker of miracles. He was the successor of  Sai Baba of  Shirdi (Maharashtra) who shifted his Ashram to his home town Puttapurthi in Andhra Pradesh and set up several organisations. He faced accusations over the years which include sleight of hand, sexual abuse, money laundering, fraud, and murder. However, his devotees strongly rejected these accusations, considering them propaganda against their guru.                                                                                                                                                                              He is believed to have died on March 29, 2011 but was declared 20 days later, it is alleged by his cousin that Trust members  ran away with most  cash and money, some were caught too.  His assets, including  institutions,  Trusts, Mandirs etc.  are estimated to be worth $ 31.5 billion.

1930 – Geeta Dutt, most popular romantic actor, singer who is popularly called Nightingale of Indian Cinema. She  sang over 1400 Hindi and more Bengali, Punjabi, Nepali and Bhojpuri songs, . She acted  in Aar Paar, Pyaasa, Baazi, CID etc. and sang very popular songs during 1950s-1970s. Married legendary director/producer Guru Dutt.  She won many cine awards and honors including Dada Saheb Phalke in 2000 and Padma Vibhushan in 2008.

RIP…. 1937 – Sir Jagadish  Chandra Bose, Indian physicist and plant physiologist who investigated the properties of very short radio waves, wireless telegraphy, and radiation-induced fatigue in inorganic materials. he  reseached  on  radio microwave optics,  He waas made Fellow of Royal Society,  and won  honours worldwide.

You may have known…. 1. If a male lion takes over a pride, he executes all of the cubs in fury.       2.  The median age in India is around 28 years. This means half of India’s population is younger than 28, and half is older.
