On this day, 12 Oct….

1901 – Theodore Roosevelt renames “Executive Mansion,” “The White House”.  Situated in Washington  in about 18 acres of space, it  houses the official Residence and work place of all US presidents since 1800 AD (first occupied by President John Adams).  (Pic credit- GraphicaArtis/Getty Images).

1967 – National Conference, the Working Committee of Jammu and Kashmir, unanimously passed the proposal to a permanent merger of the state with India.   Bakshi Ghulam Mohammed Sadiq  was the Chief Minister of the state then.

1998 – Ms Sushma Swaraj is sworn in as the 5th   Chief Minister of Delhi, replacing  Sahib Singh Verma. She lasted just 3 months as her party Bhartiya Janta Party lost Delhi  Assembly  elections to Indian National Congress (I). Sheila Dikshit became the CM after her.  She was later elected to Lok Sabha (5 times) from, New Delhi and  Vidisha in Madhya Pradesh and was Indian I&B Minister PM Vajpayee Governmernt and  later External Affairs Minister in PM Modi  govt.  between 2014-19.

1999 – Pervez Musharraf takes power in Pakistan from Nawaz Sharif through a bloodless coup. He was  Army chief  but dismissed the  PM  Nawaz Shariff  govt. while  he was touring Sri Lanka  and  became Chief Executive under  nartial law. Musharraf was responsbilbe for waging a war with India in Kargil in 1999 which Pak lost badly. He remained Pak president  upto 2008, when he fled to Dubai and stayed there nutil death in 2023.

Born…. 1911 – Vijay Madhavji Merchant Thackersey,  an all-time great Indian batsman and medium pacer.  Played for India between 1929 to 1951 with an average of  71.64  and  150 ODIs scoring 13,470  runs with 45 centuries, 11 double and 51 half-centuries. He was more successful against Aistralia as well and  2nd only to  Don Bradman’s record of averages. A tournament called Vijay Merchant Trophy for Under-16  Crickters was established in  his memory. He was also appointed Bombay Sheriff in 1970.

RIP…. 1967 – Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia also known as “Dauntless Dr. Lohia”, freedom fighter, social reformer and socialist leader. He had co-founded the ‘Praja Socialist Party’ in 1952 alongwith Acharya JB Kriplani. He led a movement for liberation of Goa from Portugese rule in  1946.

Titbits….  1823 – Charles Macintosh of Scotland begins selling raincoats, a waterproof  cover made of textile and rubber (neptha distillate) to save from rainwater.                                                                                                                                                                                                              You may have known….  Ants, both larvae and adult, are eaten in many countries.
