1834 – The first ship, named the “Atlas,” carrying Indian labourers arrived in Mauritius, an event now commemorated as Immigrants’ Day in Mauritius.
1950 – India rebukes Mao for invasion of Tibet.
Born…. 1534 – Guru Ramdas, 4th Sikh Guru. Born as Bhai Jetha in Chuna Mandi Lahore, he got his new name from 3rd Guru Amar Das i
n 1574. He convinced mughal emperor Akbar on offering of langar as pious tradition for feeding the poor, and Kar seva. . He wrote 674 hymes (shlokas) added into Guru Granth Saheb, and systems of Anand Karj, Masands for kirtan and collecting funds for spreading Sikhism and Gurudwaras etc. He founded Ramdaspur later renamed as Amritsar and a Sarovar built around Harmandir Complex by his son Guru Arjan Devji in 1604.
1871 – Kashinath Raghunath Mitra, famous editor of monthly magazine ‘Manoranjan.
1897 – Sohrab Meharwanji Modi, theatre and film producer, director and
actor. He is known for very forceful deliovery of dialogues in films Khoon Ka Khoon, Sikander, Pukar, Prithvi Vallabh, Jhansi Ki Rani, Mirza Ghalib, Jailor, Naushervan-E Adil etc.
1941 – Arun Shourie, Jalandhar born economist, journalist, author, editor and BJP leader. He worked as an economist in World Bank, member Planning Commission, was editor of Indian Exprress group during Emergency period and was critical of PM Indira Gandhi’s policies. cause of Press Freedom and other social activism. He worked as Minister for Disinvestment, Communication & IT. He privatised Maruti, VSNL, Hindustan Zinc etc. He criticises many economic policies of present BJP govt. He made large donations to IIT Kanpur Rs. 12 crores) for setting up Biosciences & Bio-Engineering deptt. and later for Environment Sciences & Environment
Engineering (Rs. 11 crores). He won Roman Magasaysay Award and various other accolades on Freedom of Press.
1960 – Anu Malik, music director and popular singer, music composer/director. Won a National Award and 2 Filmfare awards for film songs for Refugee, Aa Gale Lag Jaa, Badshah, Baazi, Begham Jaan etc.
1965 – Shahrukh Khan, popular romantic actor, film producer.Shahrukh Khan, one of the most successful romantic actor, film actor, producer. Also known as King Khan entered cineworld with and acted in about 100 films including Baazigar, Dil Wale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Swades, Chak de India, Veer Zara, Darr etc. He has won 8 Filmfare Kal Ho Na Ho etc.
1981 – Esha Deol, Bollywood actor, elder daughter of legendary romantic hero Dharmendra and Hema Malini. Has acted in Koi Mere Dil Se Poochhe, Dhoom-2, Yuva, No Entry, Aayutha Ezhuhuthu (Tamil film), Kaal, Cash, Ye Dil Ne Kaha etc. She won a filmfare award on debut in 2002. (pic credit-India News)
