1530 – King Henry VIII’s divorce request is denied by the Pope Henry then declares that he, not the Pope, is supreme head of England’s Church.

1799 – The Royal Institution in England was founded.

1854 – Charles Miller of St. Louis, patented the first U.S. sewing machine to stitch buttonholes.

1930 – Congress  leader Mahatma Gandhi began his iconic 24-day Salt March from Sabarmati Ashram to Dandi to protest British monopoly on salt.

1967 – Golda Meir, was elected firdst lady Prime Minister of Israel.

1987 – Gavaskar becomes 1st cricket batsman to score 10,000 Test runs. He achieved this feat during a match against Pakistan in Ahmedabad.

1991 – The Indian government announced new policy measures further liberalizing the economy.

1996 – Union Cabinet under PM Narasimha Rao clears decks for extending benefits of reservation to Dalit Christians.                                                                                                                                                                          1997 – Five citizens sue Japanese PM Ryutaro Hashimoto, citing  his smoking has violated the country’s Constitution guaranteeing a wholesome life.

2006 – A series of bomb blasts, coordinated by terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba, rocked the Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple and Varanasi Cantonment Railway Station. 28 devotees were killed and 101 injured. A deadly  LeT terrorist Tunda was  caught in 2010 and  tried in  special court.

2023 – Gender equality now “300 years away” and “vanishing before our eyes” for reasons including maternal mortality and early marriage”, according to UN Secretary General António Guterres in speech for International Woman’s Day (March 8).

Born….  1949 – Ghulam Nabi Azad, senior Indian National Congress politician. A vetertan Jammu & Kashmir  politician who served as Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha between 2014 and 2021. He also served as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir from 2005 to 2008.  He left Congress in 2022 and formed a Democratic Progressive Azad Party and supports PM Modi’s policies on  Muslim Women’s Rights, removal of Section 370 in J&K. He was also awar5ded Padmas Bhushan honour in 2022.

1955 – Anupam Kher, the versatile film actor. A veteran of  Bollywood, who plays mostly  character and comic roles. He has acted in about 540  films over a  span  of  four  decades.  Films like Saransh,  Khosla Ka Ghosla, Rang De Basanti,  Silver Lining Playbook,  Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge,  The Accidental Prime Minister, A Wednesday, Saudagar, Lamhe, Kashmir Files   are some of his  notable films  he’s acted, directed or produced.  He has won 2 National  Film awards, 8 Filmfare and   several others. He was awarded Padma Shri in  2004 and Padma Bhushan in 2016 by Govt. of India.

1973 – Arnab Goswami,  popular  Indian journalist and news anchor. A  right-wing  idealist,  criticising  terror and fundamentalist activities in India and world over. He is the  Editor-in-Chief and MD of Republic Media Network, a conservative news organisation oriented towards Hindutva and Sanatan Sanskri.  Coming from a literaray and socio-political family of Guwahati, Assam,  he studied in Oxford  University and became Felix Scholar. He worked wth Telegraph India, NDTV, Times Now  and interviewed  many of world’s  top poitical leaders on his Frankly Speaking With Arnab and  Newshour   debate shows  at 9 pm.  including  Gordon Brown,  Hamid Karzai, Benazir Bhutto, Parvez Musharraf, Hilary Clinton, Dala Lama and PM Modi in 2014, after he became the PM.  

RIP….1952 – Paramahansa Yogananda,  Indian American monk, spiritual guru who preached  meditation and Kriya Yoga . Established his yoga institute Self-Realisation Fellowship Yogoda Satsanga Society of India. He wrote Autobiography of a Yogi, God Talks With  Arjuna,  The Second Coming of Christ, Bhagvad Gita etc.  He was the first Indian Guru to be hosted in White House in 1927.

1961 – Govind Ballabh Pant, freedom fighter, politician. He  served eight years as the first Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. Was appointed 2nd Home Minister after Sardar Patel’s death in  Jan. 1955. He  was instrumental in the linguistic reorganisation of Indian states. He was bestowed with Bharat Ratna in 1959.

Titbits….  1908 – Cincinnati Mayor Mark Breith stood before city council and announced, “women are not physically fit to operate automobiles”.

You may have known…. Shampoo originated in India during the 16th century as a natural hair cleansing method using herbs like soapberry (ritha), amla, and shikakai. The term is derived from the Hindi word champo, originating fr om the Sanskrit root chapati, which means to press, knead, or massage the head. While “shampoo” entered the English language around 1762 from Hindi, its roots are in the Sanskrit word chapati. The concept was introduced to Britain in the 18th/19th century, with entrepreneurs like Sake Dean Mahomed, an Indian traveler and surgeon, popularizing “shampooing” (therapeutic head massages) in Brighton (pic credit-famina.in).
