1962 – Chinese, Indian troops clash on border, claiming 50 lives. By the end of  clashes, Chinese trops had seized large areas of  Aksai Chin, Siachin Glacier and North-Western parts of  Pak occupied  Kashmir (pic credit-YouTube.com).

1976 – Mao Zedong’s widow Jiang Qing & “Gang of Four” arrested & charged with plotting a coup.

1991 – BJP government in UP acquires the disputed Ayodhya land.

2008 – The first train service in the Kashmir Valley was flagged off by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh from Naugam station.

Born…. 1902 – Jai Prakash Narayan, popularly  called JP, was   a prominent Independence activist/reformer. His wife Prabhavati was also a freedom fighter and associate of Gandhi ji at Sabarmati Ashram, Ahmedabad. JP was pulled into  the movement and followed  Gandhi, Nehru  Maulana Azad, later  to Marxism,  Bolshevik’s in Soviet  War  and socialist ideas. Studied in  Berkley Unoiversity in California, he was an associate of  Lohia,  Minoo Masani, Achyut Patwardhan and others, he  opposed PM Nehru’s  policies  after Independence against Labour laws (presided All India  Railwaymen’s Federation). He took a strong  opposition to PM Indira Gandhi’s Emergency in 1975 and called for Saqmpoorna Kranti, bringing down her regime  and installing Janata Party  Govt. Later dejected by the fall of Janta govt. he  went to Patna on Oct. 08, 1979.                                                                He was  honoured with Bharat Ratna,  Ramon Magsaysay award and other honours.

1941 – Amitabh Bachchan, prominent Bollywood  actor called  Mahanayak and  Actor of the Century for his long and successful film career.  Son of a noted poet  Harivansh Rai  Bachchan, he entered films thru’  Mrinal Sen’s Bhuwan Shome as voice artist and later Saat Hindustani, Parwana, Reshma aur Shera, Guddi, Bombay to Goa,  Zanjeer,   Trishul, Shakti, Deewar,  Namak Haraam,  Anand, Chupke Chupke,  Sholey, Kabhie Kabhie etc. over 200 films, most of them high grossimg  Box Office ventures. He also  won an election to the Lok Sabha from  Allahabad in 1984 defeating big gun HN Bahuguna.  He started a film  production company ABCL but  it flopped soon.  He is also an anchor in  a successful  TV show KBC (Kaun Banega Crorepati). His wife Jaya and son  Abhishek and daughter-in-law   Aiswvarya Rai  are also popular actors.  He has won 6 National Film and 16  Filmfare awards,

1968 – Chandrachur Singh, an impressive  Bollywood   and TV actor.  He is known for roles in Maachis, Josh, Kya Kehna,  Sardar Paar, Aamdani Atthanni-Kharcha Rupaiyya etc. and  TV serials Saavdhan India, Royal  Rasoi, Aarya, Dil Bekrara etc. He has won a Filmfare award, an IIFA and a Screen award.
