1803 – The British East India company defeated the Maratha Army at the Battle of Assaye.

1879 – Richard S. Rhodes invented the Audiophone, the first hearing aid.

1932 – The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was officially founded by Abdulaziz Ibn Saud.

1952 -1st closed circuit pay-TV telecast of a sports event.

1965 – The Indian Army secured the Kashmir Valley and the only object left was to clean out the remnants of the Gibraltar Force sent by  Pakistan, to capture Jammu & Kashmir  by cutting off  communication from Pathankot  area. Under the guidance of United Nations, the cease-fire came into effect.

1999 – India rejects Pakistan’s proposal for an international conference on arms control.

2018 – Prime Minister launches “Modicare,” a free healthcare programme, the world’s largest healthcare  as  Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY)  with Healthcare worth Rs. 2 lakh per family and  expanded  on September 11, 2024 for Rs. 5 lakh family  Medicare for family.

Born…. 1908 – Ramdhari Singh ‘Dinkar’,  freedom fighter poet and essayist.  Known  as  Rashtrakavi,  Dinkar wrote Veer Ras  poems, like  Hunkar in 1938,  Singhasan  Khali  Karo  Janta  Aati  Hai  and  more. He was  elected to Rajya Sabha between 1952-64 and  awarded  Padma  Bhushan.  His collections  of  poems  Pranbhang, Dhoop Chhaon, Dilli,  Kurukshetra  etc.

1935 – Prem Chopra, popular Bollywood and Punjabi  acted, mostly playing  villain roles. He debuted in  and went on to act in over 380 films like  Chaudhary Karnail Singh, Shaheed, Pukar, Woh Kaun This, Teesri Manjil, Sagai, Mera Saya, Poorab Aur Paschim,  Bobby, Kati Patang, Koi Mil Gaya, Do Anjane  etc. He won a Filmfare and  Lifetime Achievement award, apart from several film  accolades.

1943 – Tanuja Samarth, vetaran  Bengali and Bllywood actress. She is the daughter of veteran actress Shobhana Samarth and  younger sister of  Nutan Behl, and mother of actress Kajol and Tanisha. Tanuja  has acted in Memdidi, Chand Aur Suraj, Haathi Mere Saathi, Mere Jeevan Saathi, Jewel Thief, Jeene Ki Raah, Anubhav, Raaj Kumari, Pratham Kadam Phool etc. She has won a Filmfare award and Lifetime Achievement Award apart from other film accolades.

RIP…. 1863 – Rao Tula Ram, commander and later king of Rewari (Haryana), one of the powerful  leaders of India’s First War of Freedom  1857. He captured Delhi throne from the English army  for a few days in may 1857 and helped Bahadur Shah with money and forces   but was beaten by British army soon. He went to  Kabul to seek help from  the Shah of Iran and Dost Mohammed Khan of Afghanistan but  was pisoned by some detractors and died in Kabul on Sept. 23, 1863  at a young age of 38 years.  He has bee honoured as a great marture of Freedom Move
