1854 – Walter Hunt of New York City was awarded the first U.S. patent for a paper shirt collar. Very thin white paper was pasted on both sides of a base of thin white cotton muslin. After being cut out or stamped out of this material, such collars could be pressed between heated forms to the shape of the neck. To guard against the effect of perspiration, the collars were then varnished with a colourless bleached shellac which also enabled cleaning by wiping with a damp cloth. It was expected the collar could be made at less than the cost of laundering a linen shirt collar. (Walter Hunt was a prolific inventor, best known for the safety pin and as developer of the first repeating rifle).
1871 – The first U.S. patent for perforated wrapping paper was awarded to Seth Wheeler of Albany, NY. The paper was wound into rolls and could easily be torn off at the perforations. Paper was already manufactured in rolls; only the step of perforation was added in its production, either with a row of holes or short cuts.
1909 – French aviator Louis Blériot flew across the English Channel in a monoplane, travelling from Calais, France, to Dover, England, in 37 minutes. This was the world’s first international overseas airplane flight.
1946 – 1st bikini is shown at a Paris fashion show.
1959 – A hovercraft crossed the English Channel for the first time.
1961 – Delhi upgraded as an A-class city on the basis of provisional Census figures of 1961. (This would get more HRA for government employees).
1978 – Louise Joy Brown, the first test tube baby was born in Oldham, England. She had been conceived through the technique of in-vitro fertilisation.
1983 – 1st non-human primate, baboon, conceived in a lab dish, San Antonio.
1984 – Soviet cosmonaut Svetlana Savitskaya, made her second trip into space, during which she became the first woman to walk in space. Savitskaya carried out over three hours of experiments outside the orbiting space station Salyut Seven.
1997 – Laloo Yadav resigns as Bihar Chief Minister after CBI-designated court issues an arrest warrant against him in fodder scam case. His wife, Rabri Devi, is sworn in as his successor. She becomes first woman Chief Minister of the State.
2000 – P.T. Usha, Star Indian athlete, announces retirement from international athletics at a press conference in New Delhi.
2018 – Liquid lake found on Mars under its South Pole by European Space Agency’s Mars Express orbiter reported in “Science”.
2018 – Party of former cricketer Imran Khan, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), wins the most votes but not a majority in Pakistan’s Pakistan general election, which are marred by violence and a bomb that kills 31 people.
2019 – US Justice department announces resumption of use of the death penalty, scheduling five executions.

2001 – Phoolan Devi, former decoit whose stoy was filmed as Bandit Queen. She fought an election to Lok Sabha in 1996 and won.
